Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu’s intense audition video
When you see Stephanie Hsu’s audition tape, it’s clear why she not only booked the role but why she’s now an Oscar nominee.
The Oscar nominations featured a raft of first-time nominees in the acting categories.
Some of them were famous veterans of the industry – Colin Farrell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy and Michelle Yeoh – while others were up-and-comers such as Paul Mescal, Brian Tyree Henry and Barry Keoghan.
And then there’s Stephanie Hsu. The California-born actor broke out in a big way in Everything Everywhere All At Once and is now a bona fide Oscar nominee.
She’s previously had recurring roles in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and The Path, and bit parts in Set It Up and Shang-Chi but the Oscar frontrunner is her first big role. Talk about making it count.
If you had any question over Hsu’s inclusion on that illustrious nominations list, where she’s up against her co-star Curtis as well as Angela Bassett, Hong Chau and Kerry Condon, then you obviously haven’t seen the film.

She plays Joy Wang/Jobu Tupaki, a demanding role that required her to access and perform the whole range of emotions from childlike vulnerability to pain masquerading as sociopathy. It was a grounded and chaotic performance.
And an audition video making the rounds on social shows Hsu, who will star alongside Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy, was destined to be Jobu Tupaki.
The three-and-a-half minute long raw footage shows Hsu auditioning with the infamous everything bagel scene and already evident is the same intensity and playfulness that made it into the final cut.
Unsurprisingly, the impressive video is, well, impressing fans. It’s been watched 5.1 million times and is bound to clock up many more views before the Oscars ceremony in mid-March.
