Margot Robbie skips Oscars red carpet, presents award with Morgan Freeman

The Australian actress avoided the red carpet at this year’s awards, but later emerged onstage in a breathtaking gown.

Margot Robbie wasn’t on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars, leading many to believe she was a no-show.

But the Australian actress, 32, popped up onstage to present an award with Morgan Freeman during the award ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The Babylon star wore a beautiful Armani Prive off-the-shoulder gown at Hollywood’s night of nights, which was adorned with black sequins.

The Queensland-born star, who is next set to star in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, wore her hair out with a centre part, as she flaunted minimal make-up.

Robbie, who has been nominated for an Academy Award twice previously, did not receive any individual nods at 2023’s awards, though her film Babylon was up for three gongs.

It’s not known why Robbie skipped the red carpet but her boycott means she may have missed the beginning of the show, in which Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel made a brutal joke about Babylon’s failure at the box office.

“There are some things that movies can do that TV just can’t,” Kimmel began. “For example, a TV show can’t lose $100 million. Is the gang from Babylon here? They know.”

Babylon was directed by Damien Chazelle, and despite its all star cast including Robbie and Brad Pitt – and it’s generally favourable reviews among critics – it struggled to make money.

It pocketed around $US63 million against a budget of $US80 million.
