Mad Max: Fury Road becomes Australia’s most successful film at the Academy Awards
AUSTRALIANS are celebrating after a record-breaking swag of Oscar gongs for any homegrown film.
MAD Max: Fury Road has officially become Australia’s most successful film ever at the Oscars, scooping up six statuettes in an outstanding result for the George Miller film.
The post-apocalyptic desert action chase film, made in the Namibian desert and Fox Studios in Sydney was nominated in 10 categories.
The Piano, which starred Holly Hunter, Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel and Sam Neill, was our previous most successful film at the Academy Awards, winning three Oscars in 1993.
The Australian Mad Max makeup and hairstyling team of Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega and Damian Martin won their category, with Vanderwalt proclaiming “You can pop the corks at home — we’re bringing back gold!”
The win came just minutes after Colin Gibson and Lisa Thompson won for Best Production Design, and English costume designer Jenny Beavan claimed Best Costume Design.
Director George Miller’s wife Margaret Sixel also won for Best Film Editing taking the film to a tally of four.
“Mad Max was the best reviewed film of 2016,” she said. “It took incredible courage and guts to make this film.”
Mark Mangini and David White also won for Sound Editing.
“I’m proud to represent all my Australian colleagues,” said White as he thrust the Oscar in the air.
Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff and Ben Osmo also won for Sound Mixing.
Mad Max: Fury Road is also the highest-grossing Australian film of all time, surpassing Crocodile Dundee, Australia and Babe to take over $375 million at the international box office.
It was also the most-nominated Australian film in Oscar history, surpassing Baz Luhrmann’s musical extravaganza Moulin Rouge which received eight nominations in 2001.
Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as well as Aussie models Abbey Lee Kershaw and Megan Gale.
