Jennifer Lawrence says she was humiliated people thought her Oscars fall was ‘fake’

Jennifer Lawrence fell over as she accepted her 2013 Best Actress Oscar. But the criticism that followed has “humiliated” her ever since.

Jennifer Lawrence has said she was left “humiliated” and “devastated” for years after she was accused of faking her fall at the 2013 Oscars.

The 30-year-old actress was only 23 when she won Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook. As she went to accept the golden statue in her billowing pink Dior gown, the Hunger Games star sensationally tripped up the stairs.

Her co-star Bradley Cooper, as well as Australian actor Hugh Jackman, rushed to her rescue, and she was given a standing ovation when she finally made it to the microphone.

“You guys are only standing up because I fell and you feel bad. That was embarrassing,” she said at the time.

Now reflecting on the incident, Lawrence told Heather McMahan on the Dear Media Absolutely Not podcast that the incident was “sensitive” for her for many years.

“I can look back on it now I’m a little older more fondly but for a long time the whole thing was very sensitive,” she said.

“Also because, I’m sorry, but (journalist) Anderson Cooper – I saw him on CNN like three days later saying, ‘Oh well she obviously faked the fall’ and it was so devastating because it was this horrific humiliation to me.”

Explaining further how she felt at the time, Lawrence said she wasn’t expecting her name to be called and didn’t have a speech prepared.

“I was very nervous and didn’t even acknowledge the possibility of winning. Then they call my name and I’m elated and in shock, like you kind of black out,” she said.

“And then I fell and it just erased everything from my mind and my whole brain went blank.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever have a chance to make a speech like that again, like that didn’t feel good for me not to have a speech.”

Lawrence was also nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars for the 2011 film Winter’s Bone, as well as the 2016 film Joy.

She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for American Hustle in 2014.
