Surprising stars nominated for Gold Logie
Seven stars have been named as nominees for this year’s Gold Logie, but TV viewers might be surprised by two of the names on the list.
The nominees for this year’s Gold Logie have been revealed and there are a couple of shock inclusions.
The most surprising names on the list are Costa Georgiadis who has hosted Gardening Australia since 2012 and Eve Morey from Neighbours. Also making the short list is Sam Mac from Sunrise, Tom Gleeson from Hard Quiz, Rodger Corser from Doctor Doctor, Amanda Keller from The Living Room and Waleed Aly from The Project.
Speaking to news.com.au after the nominees were announced today on the Gold Coast, TV WEEK editor Thomas Woodgate said he can understand why some people might be shocked by Georgiadis and Morey’s nominations.
“While I do see why people from the outset might be surprised by Costa’s inclusion, people need to remind themselves that Gardening Australia is a heritage show,” Mr Woodgate said.
“It’s celebrating 30 years on air this year which is quite extraordinary and Costa is the face of that show. I can understand why people might be surprised but when you think about it, maybe it’s just the right time for the show to get the recognition it deserves.”
The Gold Logie is one of 11 awards in the Most Popular categories which are voted on by the public. Voting for who should make the shortlist was open from March 4 until March 31.
There are also 12 Most Outstanding categories which are voted on by a panel of industry experts.
Morey’s nomination for the Gold Logie comes after her emotional farewell from Neighbours in March. Her character, Sonya Rebecchi, died from cancer in Toadie’s arms.
Mr Woodgate told news.com.au her character’s heart wrenching death would have “without a question” motivated fans to vote for Morey.
“The timing of the storyline was incredible,” he said. “In week one of voting, Sonya passed away so heartbreakingly on screen so of course it played a role. And you know what, it should play a role. If we’re going to celebrate any actress or actor or host, what they do on air at the time of voting is going to play a part.”
The same logic can be applied to 2016 Gold Logie winner Waleed Aly who most likely got a boost in votes after his powerhouse interviews with Scott Morrison and Jacinda Ardern on The Project.
Tom Gleeson finds himself a Gold Logie contender this year after helping Grant Denyer take home the big one last year.
Gleeson launched a social media campaign to help Denyer win after Family Feud was axed, saying at the time, “Let’s push the Logies to its most absurd extreme ever and give the Gold Logie to a guy that doesn’t have a TV show”.
Gleeson shocked fans late last week when he announced that he was quitting as host of ABC’s Hard Quiz.

But it appears that was just an elaborate prank with the comedian explaining on Twitter today: “Last year proved you can only win if you don’t have a show. That’s why I axed myself. When I win Gold, I promise I will un-axe #HardQuiz immediately. Please forgive me HARD!”
Now that the nominees have been announced, the public can vote for their favourite from the shortlist with live voting reopening from June 24 right up until the end of the red carpet telecast on the night of the Logies.
So who is the favourite to take home the Gold?
“Because there are some names we haven’t seen before, I think it really does throw the field quite open,” Mr Woodgate told news.com.au.
“But if you want me to put a name out there that I think is the one to beat at this stage, I think Amanda Keller going back to back in the Gold Logie nominations is telling. I think she is extremely likeable, she’s got a massive radio audience and she’s also just come off a wonderful job as co-host of Dancing with the Stars which I thought was a really nice show.
“I would say that Amanda is the one to beat, but I’m not the one who has to make the decision, that’s the Australian public.”
Also noteworthy thus year is that Foxtel scored a record 20 nominations, including 13 for its Aussie dramas, five for lifestyle, entertainment and factual shows, and two for news and sports coverage.
Leading the streaming giant’s nods was prison drama Wentworth, which returns for its seventh season this Tuesday, which nabbed six nominations.
The 61st TV WEEK Logie Awards will be held at The Star Gold Coast on Sunday, June 30.
