Logies 2020: TV WEEK announces cancellation of this year’s awards
TV WEEK has announced this year’s Logie Awards have been canned amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
This year’s Logie Awards have been cancelled amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Bauer Media, publisher of the event’s main sponsor TV WEEK, announced the news in a press statement this evening.
The event was scheduled to be held at The Star on the Gold Coast on June 28.
"We have spent the last few weeks discussing with our event partners what the TV WEEK Logie Awards could look like in 2020 while adhering to Government restrictions and working around the challenges of COVID-19," said Fiona Connolly, publisher of Bauer Media's weekly titles.
"All parties agree the most positive outcome is to not hold the TV WEEK Logies, including public voting, in 2020, but to stage an even bigger event on the Gold Coast in 2021.
"We would like to thank Queensland for being a wonderful Logies host and partner in delivering this event over the past two years and we cannot wait to return to The Star Gold Coast next year.
"We will return in 2021 with an epic event that will take into consideration the 12 months of television just past, as well as all programs that will air for the remainder of this year."
In February TV WEEK announced a shake-up to this year’s nomination process, and the addition of a brand new award.
This year’s Logies was set to have a new, extended yet simplified voting process for each of the 12 public-voted ‘Most Popular’ categories, including the Gold Logie category (which was controversially won by comedian Tom Gleeson last year).
All networks were invited to submit candidates for each of the Most Popular Awards, and for the first time “a combination of TV ratings, Nielsen Social Content Ratings and the opinions of TV Week’s panel of experts” would be taken into account to determine the final nominees the public gets to vote for.
Voting for the most popular categories was set to open on May 24.
