Logies 2019 live: Winners, speeches and funniest moments

It was supposed to be his comeback but Karl Stefanovic didn’t have an easy time, facing repeated jabs about his personal life.

Logies red carpet interviews

The 2019 Logie Awards are finally over, with comedians Tom Gleeson, Peter Helliar and Julia Morris providing some of the night’s biggest laughs.

And Karl Stefanovic was the butt of many a joke throughout the night — even the Hall of Fame segment included a surprising jab about his divorce.

Here are the ceremony highlights:

Hours earlier, Gleeson delivered the night’s opening monologue — and he didn’t hold back. Here are his best jokes — many of them about Karl Stefanovic, who was shown putting on a brave face from his seat in the audience:

“I think the reason they asked me to do the opening is because Channel 9 has run out of stars. They don’t have any left. They have new rule on breakfast TV: If you are too entertaining, they fire you. Am I right, Karl? If you’re too entertaining, they fire you. What I’m saying is Kochie, your job is safe.”

“Channel 9 were happy to cash in on (MAFS’) ratings by showing off your tacky weddings — and fired Karl Stefanovic for having one. Karl, we need you back. When will they take you off the bench? The Today Show needs you. I was on the Today Show the other day to promote the Logies. Ratings are so low I felt like I was keeping a secret.”

“Israel Folau sent me a message. He wants me to let you know you’re all going to hell.

Doesn’t worry me though. I know what hell is: Having to watch a Wallabies game.”

“The Jetstar nominees (for the Gold Logie) Eve Morey, Sam Mac and bloody Costa. I saw him out the front selling a Big Issue.”

“It’s been a weird year for TV hasn’t it. Cricket was on Seven. Tennis on Nine. The Footy Show was on-air.”

Karl Stefanovic winced through the barrage of jokes at his expense.

“The Logies is like a house party: The ABC, we’re like the old neighbours complaining about the noise. Channel 7 is like the sensible family that never gets invited to parties. Channel 10 is the younger people that make a lot of noise even though no-one is listening. Channel 9 is like the divorced dad that hosts the party and spends the whole night trying to root SBS.”

News.com.au’s Bronte Coy is reporting live from the Logies tonight — and quizzed Gleeson about his controversial Gold Logie campaign on the red carpet.

“(This Gold Logies campaign) has landed kind of exactly where I wanted it to. I’m just trying to remind everyone it’s no big deal and we can have fun with it … And I’m having a lot of fun (with it),” he told her. “I’m a stand-up comedian, usually ripping into politicians or religions, so the Logies to me is kind of like kicking a dog, it’s too easy.”

As the night wore on — and Karl Stefanovic’s personal life became the butt of more jokes — we asked Gleeson about his own barrage of Karl jokes. He revealed there was even a joke he left out:

“I knew Karl was turning up, I read it the other day. I thought, ‘Great, Karl’s here, there’s two minutes taken up’. I had another line in my head I was gonna say — ‘Oh you didn’t bring your plus one? Good choice’.”

Gleeson also told news.com.au’s Bronte Coy that he wasn’t nervous about opening the show: “I’ve done a lot of s**t corporate gigs so it wasn’t hard — this is just a s**t corporate gig for TV.”

Gleeson told us that he had run through his jokes last night “over a few beers on the balcony”, and that Nine hadn’t asked to hear his material before he went on stage.

“They’re pretty good. Nine understand it’s more fun if you’re more freewheeling. It’s better — and people can handle it, surely?”

HELLIAR’S HILARIOUS GOLD LOGIE ROAST

Dressed as a giant Gold Logie, and with Gold favourite Amanda Keller by his side, Peter Helliar roasted some of the nominees in the night’s biggest category:

Costa Georgiadis: “How does Jim’s Mowing get nominated for a Gold Logie? Is it Logies or hire a hubbie?”

Tom Gleeson: “That’s what the world needs right now. Another red-headed white man running a hate campaign. What’s the point of the ABC winning a Gold Logie anyway? It’s going to end up with the Australian Federal Police after the next bunch of raids anyway.”

Waleed Aly: “Waleed’s brother is an actual doctor. No matter how many Gold Logies you’ll win mate you’ll still be a massive disappointment for your family.”

Rodger Corser: “Who spells Rodger with a D? I don’t spell Pete with a K. The D is as pointless as Israel Folau telling atheists they’re going to hell. Israel, they’re atheists, they don’t give a damn about hell!”

Sam Mac: “A weather man has been nominated for the Gold Logie. In the Australian television ecosystem, brekky weather presenters are somewhere between infomercial ambassador and Tattslotto government supervisors. How does he enjoy doing that job? He’s clearly on drugs. Could you imagine waking up at some ungodly hour to get to some preschool in Canberra to go Bollywood dance with kids with ADD. Then give viewers information they already have on their bloody phones!”

KERRY’S SURPRISE KARL JAB

This year’s Hall of Fame award went to TV veteran and former 7:30 host Kerry O’Brien. “Can I just saw how pleased I am not to be receiving this award posthumously,” O’Brien quipped after Waleed Aly presented him with the award.

Another joke from Kerry seemed to come out of left-field, as he appeared to reference Karl Stefanovic’s high-profile divorce to Cassandra Thorburn while thanking his own wife:

“Sue James, my wife and best friend for 40 years, warned me tonight not to say how much she had helped me in my career, as Karl Stefanovic had said here at the Logies a few years ago, because it [had] probably cost him a couple of million. Sorry, darling, you are going to have to lower your sights.”

O’Brien was referring to Stefanovic’s 2011 Gold Logie acceptance speech, in which he thanked then-wife Cassandra Thorburn for giving up her own career to support him and raise their children.

The cameras briefly cut to Stefanovic, who looked a bit deflated — surely the poor bloke had assumed he’d be safe from jokes at his expense during the Hall of Fame speech.

Later in the night, Karl’s old Today colleague Richard Wilkins again put the spotlight on him, approaching his table on-camera for a quick chat between awards presentations.

“Dickie! I’m looking forward to my first Logie in 15 years without having to get up at 3:30 in the morning,” said Stefanovic.

“Good news, you can have a massive night and have a big sleep-in,” said Wilkins.

“I did that anyway,” Stefanovic said with a chuckle.

JULIA’S KILLER ONE-LINER

In recent years Julia Morris has hammed it up on the Logies stage with elaborate slapstick and song-and-dance numbers — this year she kept it simple with a brilliant, brief gag.

She presented alongside Gold Logie nominee Costa Georgiadis, walking on stage with a big, bushy beard to match his.

The pair paused before speaking to let the visual gag marinate. And then, a winning line from Julia: “Costa, tell me, did yours start with the menopause as well?”

‘MOST POPULAR’ WINNERS

MasterChef Australia took home the night’s first award, for Most Popular Reality Series, while Mystery Road won Most Popular Drama.

The Most Popular Actress award went to Deborah Mailman, who was not present at the ceremony. Most Popular Actor went to Luke McGregor for Rosehaven, who delivered a hilarious — and brief — speech. “I didn’t prepare a speech. I thought it would be arrogant. If you win most popular, who do you thank? Thanks to me, I guess. Is that 45 seconds? I’m single, see you at the afterparty.”

Gogglebox Australia won Most Popular Entertainment program — the Gogglebox cast weren’t present, as they were all watching at home in true Gogglebox style.

The Project won Most Popular Panel or Current Affairs program.

“I still remember our first episode — it was terrible,” said Carrie Bickmore, accepting the award. “Hughesy remarked at the end of it that was his career done. I remember thinking, s**t, if that what is Hughesy saying I have no hope. For us still to be here 10 years later, is so amazing.”

Have You Been Paying Attention? took home the Most Popular Comedy gong, and Most Popular Presenter went to Costa Georgiadis, his first-ever Logie. In the press room after his win, he revealed “who he’s wearing” tonight — Armani, Versace? Nope — he bought his suit at the Lifeline op-shop in Southport, QLD, about a 10-minute drive north of tonight’s Logies venue.

DYLAN’S INSPIRING SPEECH

Dylan Alcott won Most Popular New Talent, the 28-year-old athlete and ABC personality choking up as he gave an impassioned speech about the importance of representation.

“This award means a lot to me, because I used to absolutely hate having a disability. I’ve been in a wheelchair my whole life. I hated it. One of the reasons I hated it was because when I turned on the TV I never saw anybody like me. When I did someone like me, it was a road safety ad where someone drink drives has a car accident and the next scene is someone like me whose ‘life is over’. I was like, that’s not my life. I wanted to get a job on TV because I love sharing stories, but also to show that people with disabilities can be talented, funny, humorous; just normal people enjoying their lives.”

“There are 4.5 million people like me with a disability. Whether it’s in education, employment, going on a date, whatever it is, please give them an opportunity too. Because there are a lot of bloody talented people out there. I promise you they won’t disappoint,” he said.

STAR’S MESSAGE TO TROLLS

SBS football presenter Lucy Zelic, who had previously copped a torrent of social media abuse over her on-air pronunciation of foreign words and names, referenced the backlash while accepting the award for Outstanding Sports Coverage.

“Thank you everybody. For some small sections of Australian public, they’re grateful there’s no difficult way to pronounce thank you. I am thankful. I’m incredibly thankful — I could pronounce it in five languages I’ll keep it to one,” she said.

AND THE GOLD LOGIE GOES TO...TOM GLEESON

The comedian brought a glass of red wine up on stage with him to collect his award, announcing that he had been “drinking heavily” as he launched into an eight-minute speech.

Drinking his wine, Gleeson referenced his controversial, caustic Logies campaign and the fact it had annoyed some of his fellow nominees:

“Just because all of you want it and I’ve got it, don’t get angry with me. It’s alright, you’ll all survive. It’s a shame this is the last Gold Logie that’s ever going to be handed out — according to Grant Denyer, I’ve ruined the Logies. But at least I won this all by myself,” he said.

“Turns out I’m just really good at manipulating the media into doing things for me. Which, if you think about it, is why we’re all here.”

“There’s been a lot of concern that I’m turning this award into a joke. This award has done a lot of great things for a lot of different people. In the past it has represented trying to get more diversity on the screen or launching charities and that’s fantastic. But for me it represents a joke, but I love jokes. I really enjoy them. I really think we should all lighten the f**k up.”

“The aim of my campaign was just to have fun with the whole thing. Because it all doesn’t really matter. It really doesn’t matter. We can have fun and just be entertaining. People get concerned about people campaigning for the award. Is that legitimate? Maybe. Maybe not. I don’t know. But it is social media. It is just media. I’m just trying to be entertaining through the media. Do you know what would have been weirder? If I campaigned for this award sincerely. That would have been worse. Imagine me just sincerely saying I was humbled by the award. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. It would make me want to vomit.”

“I’m taking it as a win for comedy because comedy to me is really important.”

Gleeson finished with a call to arms: “I just would like to point people towards a charity called Ticketmaster.com.au. If you go there you can buy tickets to my show at the Opera House. I would really like to see you there.”

His win is already proving controversial among viewers:

There was a brief cutaway to Gold Logie favourite Amanda Keller as Gleeson continued his gloating on stage — and her expression said it all:

Ouch.
Ouch.

Did Tom win fair and square? Let us know in our poll below:

Gleeson’s jokes continued in the press room after his win. “I have a Monaro and I want to turn (this Logie) into a tow bar,” he told reporters. Asked what he’d do next, he said he would “apologise to my wife as it was a long night and not very entertaining. And then go to bed.”

Gleeson was also asked if he had looked at his fellow nominees’ faces during his speech. His response:

“No, I was more focused on myself and my victory and how well I was doing. I’d already moved on. This is the thing, even if I’d won by fighting a clean fight, they wouldn’t have been happy for me. They’d have been smiling and pretending to be happy for me, but the way I’ve done it, they’ve just been in touch with their real emotions.

“Even you can’t believe you’re going to have to print that. Me too. That’s the joy of it, I can just say this s**t all day and you will write it down and make it a story. It’s ludicrous to me.”
