Huge change coming for the Logies this year

After months of speculation, new Logies broadcaster Seven has confirmed some major details about this year’s TV industry awards.

After nearly 40 years interstate, the annual TV Week Logie Awards is heading back to Sydney.

The Daily Telegraph revealed that the biggest night in Australian television will be moving from the Gold Coast, where it had been held since 2018, after its decades-long run in Melbourne ended.

The Logies’ partnership deal with the Queensland Government ended in 2022, leading to speculation it would be moved to NSW.

“The time was right to find a new home for the Logies and bringing them back to Sydney after more than 30 years made perfect sense,” Seven boss James Warburton told the publication.

“Australia’s TV networks and many of its major production companies are based in Sydney and the city provides a backdrop for some of the country’s most popular TV shows.”

He also promised that this year’s event will be “different, bigger than ever, spectacular and a great celebration of Australia’s love of television.”

The last time Sydney hosted the event was in 1986, with the ceremony held at the State Theatre and hosted by the late Bert Newton.

While no venue has yet been announced, The Star has been tipped as the frontrunner.

The date for the 63rd annual awards has also been confirmed as Sunday, July 30.

The move comes after the Seven network poached the broadcast rights from Nine, signing a five-year agreement with ARE Media in September worth a reported $250,000, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The publication reported at the time that Nine bosses were “livid” about losing the Logies after a lengthy association.

In February 2022, TV Week magazine ended its 60-year partnership with the awards show, with its publisher handing over day-to-day operations to events company Rizer although it has still retained ownership.
