Gold Logie winner Sonia Kruger to apologise to Hamish Blake after ‘scrambled’ speech

Sonia Kruger delivered an awkward dig at fellow nominee Hamish Blake during her Gold Logie win – now, she plans to say sorry.

Surprise Gold Logie winner announced

Sonia Kruger has explained her brain was “scrambled” when she hit the stage to accept her Gold Logie on Sunday night, during which she delivered a controversial swipe at her fellow nominee.

The Channel 7 host, who took out Australian TV’s highest honour at the awards ceremony in Sydney last night, managed to pip frontrunner Hamish Blake, who missed out on what could’ve been a back-to-back win.

And Kruger, 57, couldn’t help but rub salt in the wound during her acceptance speech, revealing a private conversation she had with her agent Mark Clements, whom she shares with Blake.

First, she claimed Clements had privately told her he thought “people are a little over” Hamish, and that he preferred her chances of winning.

“He said, ‘Frankly I am hoping that [Blake] will leave the agency so I can concentrate all of my efforts on you, Sonia,’” she continued - as the camera cut to an awkward-looking Blake, seated at his table.

The line perhaps didn’t get the reaction Kruger had anticipated, and she quickly clarified that she was joking. “I am paraphrasing Mark’s words... he didn’t say that,” she said.

Speaking on KIIS 101.1’s Jase & Lauren Monday morning, Kruger said she was exhausted by the time she got up to collect her Logie, having been up early to prepare for Seven’s coverage. Further, she left her pre-prepared speech in her purse.

“I had written something. It was in my bag so that didn’t help, so I kind of just had to wing it and my brain was so scrambled,” Kruger said, estimating she’d been “going since 8am” and was “dreaming about cheeseburgers and fries in my room” when her name was called.

She added, “It’s great because we’ve all known each other for a long time and a lot of us have been around for a long time but also, you kind of want to impress them with something witty or funny and sometimes it doesn’t come off.

“I was making the joke about our agent, Hamish and I, and I think people took it seriously. It was an absolute joke and the agent found it funny, I hope Hamish did too. I must give him an apology email today.”

While the Logies was broadcast on its new home on Channel 7 for the first time – after the network nabbed the broadcast rights from Nine last year – there were still the obligatory blunders for which Aussie TV’s biggest night has become infamous.

Daryl Somers, who presented the Gold Logie, delivered a bizarre “bit” staging a mock auction of the unenthused seven nominees, which saw celebrities in the room reacting in disbelief while viewers roasted the veteran host on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Today host Karl Stefanovic suffered one of the most cringe-worthy silences of the night for his gag about breakfast show rival David ‘Kochie’ Koch.

Koch had earlier named the Stan series Bump as one of his favourite shows while on stage, leading to an apparent cocaine joke from Stefanovic.

“I did want to just check something … I am pretty sure before I heard Kochie say he loves Bump’s … season 3. Did anyone mishear that? Because I am pretty sure I did. Anyway, those are the headlines tomorrow morning …” he said.

The Logies’ first host in 11 years – comedian Sam Pang – was the clear highlight of the awards, following up Stefanovic’s awkward moment with a hilarious joke.

“I don’t want to say Karl’s joke about Kochie sank, but OceanGate are offering expeditions to visit it,” Pang quipped.
