2019 Logie Awards: Where, when and who is nominated?
One of Australia’s leading TV experts has named who he thinks will walk away with the Gold Logie at this year’s awards.
One of Australia’s leading television experts has named who he thinks will win this year’s Gold Logie.
Grant Denyer won the coveted award last year but it will be a female entertainer who walks away with the Gold Logie in 2019, according to TV Tonight’s David Knox.
Keep reading for Mr Knox’s prediction and for all the details about this year’s Logie Awards.
WHERE AND WHEN
The 61st TV WEEK Logie Awards will take place on Sunday, June 30, at The Star Gold Coast in Queensland.
The Logies will stay on the Gold Coast until 2021 thanks to a deal sealed by the Queensland government in 2017.
WHO WILL HOST
The Logies hasn’t had a main host since Shane Bourne in 2011. But for the past four years the show has opened with a hilarious monologue by comedian Dave Hughes.
Sadly Hughesy won’t be a part of the show this year, he told The Herald Sun.
“We (his family) are going to see Kate (Langbroek) in Italy and we are booked to go in the middle of June,” he said. “So I am not going to open the Logies, not this year at least.
“Part of it is a regret for me because it is probably the most satisfying gig I do in the year, but it is also the most stressful. It is a double-edged sword.
“However I am sure on Logies night when some else does really well I will think, ‘Geez, I should have done it,’ that is how my brain works.”
WHO IS NOMINATED
The awards are split into two categories: Most Popular (voted for by the public) and Most Outstanding (voted for by a panel of TV industry experts).
The shortlist of nominees for this year’s Logies will be announced on Sunday, May 26.
The public will then be able to vote for who they think should win in the Most Popular categories (including Most Popular Actor, Most Popular Actress and the Gold Logie) from June 24 onwards right until the end of the red carpet telecast on Logies night.
As for who will be nominated this year, David Knox from TV Tonight tips Amanda Keller is a shoo-in for a Gold Logie nomination.
“Logies tend to have a most-favoured nations outcome for shows that were on air during the nominations period, but I would tip the tireless Amanda Keller to be a no-brainer if not the ultimate winner on the night,” Mr Knox told news.com.au. “But look out for disrupters in the form of Tom Gleeson whose snark has a way of crashing the party. Will Karl (Stefanovic) viewers also look to exercise their muscle and create Nine’s own worst-nightmare?
“I also wouldn’t dismiss Sam Pang as an outside chance. Viewers love his droll comedy and he’s on two hit shows.”
GOLD LOGIE
The most coveted award is the Gold Logie Award For Most Popular Personality on Australian TV.
Last year the honour went to Grant Denyer despite the fact his show Family Feud was axed by Channel 10 in May 2018.
Denyer’s win was partly thanks to comedian Tom Gleeson who interviewed the TV host a week before the Logies and launched a campaign to get him gold.
“Because the Logies are an absolute joke, how good would it be if you won the gold for a show that wasn’t on air?” Gleeson said to Denyer on Hard Chat.
The comedian started the hashtag #Denyer4Gold and encouraged people to vote for him. But not everyone found the campaign funny with Russell Crowe saying it was unfair to the other Gold Logie nominees.
“I’m sorry but I don’t agree with this,” Crowe tweeted. “I know it's a gag with good intentions on behalf of @grantdenyer but … if it’s Tracey Grimshaw’s year, or Amanda’s (Keller) … wouldn’t it be s**t that a career defining landmark for them gets derailed by a ‘boys club’ gag … just saying.”
