Kendrick Lamar wins first Grammy for best rap song and best rap performance

RAPPER Kendrick Lamar collected his first ever Grammy award yesterday righting a wrong that even brought Taylor Swift to tears.

Grammys red carpet: Hits and misses

THE Grammys is undeniably a self-congratulatory exercise for those who occupy the top of the charts.

That being said, popularity is a completely legitimate tool by which to assemble a praiseworthy pool of talent.

Awarding something as subjective and nuanced as music is inevitably a tricky business.

This was highlighted by Justin Vernon’s reluctant acceptance speech for best new artist at the 2012 Grammys where he spent a lot of the time referencing the talent that does not receive an invitation to such events.

However the most controversial snub of last year’s awards was slightly amended yesterday.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar was overlooked for best rap album in 2014 in favour of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’, The Heist.

Despite Lamar’s album receiving critical acclaim and being labelled album of the year by the BBC, Complex Magazine, The New York Magazine and Pitchfork Media as well as the admission from Macklemore himself that Lamar should’ve been awarded the Grammy, it was not to be.

But yesterday, the 27-year-old bagged his first Grammy for best rap song and best rap performance with his new hit single, “I”.

While many rap fans breathed a sigh of relief, one fan was overwhelmed.

Some fans will wonder why it took a more commercially friendly song for the west coast rapper to receive the nod but Taylor Swift just seems to be excited.

Which really should come as no surprise for those who have witnessed this video:
