Australian alternative dance group Rufus Du Sol and DJ Flume to face off at Grammy Awards
The Grammy nominations are out and some huge stars have been snubbed, but the good news is that some Aussie artists received noms.
The nominees for the 62nd annual Grammy Awards have been announced and there are some very notable snubs.
The good news is that Australian alternative dance group Rufus Du Sol and DJ Flume will go head-to-head at this year’s awards.
The Australians were nominated in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, with Rufus Du Sol getting the nod for Solace and Flume for Hi This is Flume.
Sydney’s Rufus Du Sol were also nominated in the Best Dance Recording category for Underwater.
Australia’s other nominees included For King & Country who also received two nods.
They were nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance or Song for God Only Knows, their collaboration with Dolly Parton, and Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for Burn the Ships.
Baz Luhrmann also received a nod for Moulin Rouge! The Musical for Best Musical Theatre Album.
Pop newcomer Lizzo leads the Grammy nominations with eight nods, followed by 17-year-old alt-pop sensation Billie Eilish and country rapper Lil Nas X with six apiece.
Lizzo, Eilish and Lil Nas X scored nods for the top awards - Album and Record of the Year, as well as Best New Artist.
The trio will compete in the album of the year race with Bon Iver, Lana del Rey, Ariana Grande, Vampire Weekend and H.E.R.
The three artists have enjoyed a breakout year with hits such as Truth Hurts (Lizzo), Bad Guy (Eilish) and Old Town Road (Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus).
BIGGEST SNUBS
According to Fox News, one of the biggest snubs for the 2020 Grammys is Taylor Swift’s Lover, which missed out on the nomination for album of the year. Lover features production from Jack Antonoff, who received a nomination for producer of the year.
Although Swift received nominations for best pop vocal album, best pop solo performance and song of the year, her album of the year snub comes as a shock considering that Swift was the first female artist to win album of the year twice for albums 1989 and Fearless.
The Jonas Brothers, who recently made their resurgence after a six-year hiatus, received their first Grammy nomination in 10 years. The group received the nomination for best pop duo/group performance for Sucker, but failed to receive nominations in major categories such as record of the year, album of the year and song of the year.
Ed Sheeran was also snubbed for album of the year. His album No.6 Collaborations Project debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and features a range of guest appearances from artists such as Travis Scott, Eminem, Justin Bieber, Cardi B and 50 Cent.
Another Grammy snub comes in the form of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s Senorita.
Though the song received the nomination for best pop duo/group performance, the hit single did not receive the nomination for song of the year considering its vast popularity.
Bruce Springsteen’s Western Stars was also snubbed for album of the year. The country-pop album, which was released in June, received widespread critical acclaim and debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200.
The Grammy Awards, chosen by members of the Recording Academy, are the highest honours in the music industry and will be handed out in Los Angeles on January 26 in a ceremony hosted by Alicia Keys.
