Aussie comedian’s perfect one-line response to Louis C.K.’s Grammy win

Louis C.K. took home a Grammy today despite being accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women – and one Aussie comedian has launched a perfect one-line take-down.

Grammys full of cheeky Will Smith gags

Australian comedian Adam Hills has hit out at the Grammys awarding disgraced comedian Louis CK the award for Comedy Album.

Hills wrote on Twitter, “To every journalist who asks me if we now live in a world where you can’t say anything anymore: We currently live in a world where you can masturbate in front of people you employ, and then win a Grammy for talking about it.”

C.K. won the Grammy for Sincerely Louis C.K., against Nate Bargatze, Lewis Black, Chelsea Handler, Lavell Crawford and Kevin Hart. The category was not broadcast and C.K. wasn’t present to accept.

The comedian had previously won twice in the same category but not since 2017, when a series of sexual misconduct allegations were levelled at him by five women who claimed the comedian, writer and actor masturbated in front of them without consent.

C.K. admitted some of the allegations were true. His projects were dropped and cancelled, but despite a pledge to step back, C.K. has been staging a comeback attempt.

Hills wasn’t the only person incensed by C.K.’s win.

Filmmaker Sarah Ann Masse, among the women who accused Harvey Weinstein of rape and assault, wrote on Twitter, “Louis CK just won a GRAMMY. Cancel culture seems pretty selective, hm? And thanks so much to our industry for once again telling us that survivors don’t matter.”

At the time of C.K.’s nomination in November, the chief executive of the Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys, defended the organisation’s decision to include him.

He told The Wrap, “We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules of, is this recording for this work eligible based on date and other criteria.

“If it is, they can submit for consideration.”
