Golden Globes censors Seth Rogen’s explicit Ryan Gosling joke
Rogen was censored onstage at the Golden Globes, prompting viewers to wonder what his crude joke was. Here’s what he said.
There were five long seconds of silence during Seth Rogen’s presentation at the Golden Globes on Monday, with one of the actor’s crudest jokes being censored by broadcasters in the US.
Taking to the stage with Catherine O’Hara for the 82nd annual awards show at the Beverly Hilton, the two Canadians paid homage to their homeland with a Canada-inspired skit ahead of handing out the award for Best Female Actor – Limited Series.
“We’re both much more acclaimed for our Canadian work,” Rogen began, with O’Hara adding, “That’s right. Back home, we each have extensive history in award-winning performances.”
The pair then began listing several mock acting gigs which viewers in America “hadn’t heard of”, with Rogen quipping O’Hara had won “not one, but two golden antlers” for her work as “Mama Morissette in The Alanis Morissette Story.”
O’Hara went on to commend Rogen for his ‘portrayal’ of fellow Canadian Ryan Gosling in ‘Gosling, the Ryan Gosling unauthorised biopic.’
“Thank you,” Rogen said, before delivering a joke that was abruptly cut off by the Globes’ US broadcaster, CBS.
Viewers tuning into Channel 10 in Australia, however, were delivered the explicit line in full, which saw Rogen make unsavoury reference to Gosling’s work as a child star with Disney.
“It was unauthorised, and that Mickey Mouse Club handjob scene was very controversial, but we felt very important to depict,” Rogen said, which was met with awkward giggles from the live audience.
CBS opted not to censor Rogen’s further jokes about doing “a lot of Canadian adult work” before he shot to fame in the US.
“Logriders was great, Sticky Syrup, and, of course, the Mooseknuckles trilogy,” he said.
“Mooseknuckles 2: Knuckles Deep won Canada’s most illustrious adult film award actually.”
The duo were one of the most popular presenters of the night among viewers, who took to X to dub it the “best part of the night.”
“Whoever decided to pair Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara together is a genius,” one wrote.
“Brilliant pairing, writing, and delivery,” another said.
“Brilliant improv. Simply a masterclass,” a third chimed in.
“Lmao best part of the night,” a fourth wrote.
Their expert pairing wasn’t entirely random though, with the duo recently teaming up on Apple TV+’s new series The Studio, which will hit streaming in March.
