The Emmys: A glance back at the worst red carpet looks from over the years
With the Emmys set to air on Monday without red carpet arrivals, we look back to the what-were-they-thinking moments of ceremonies past.
Awards season in the Corona era is upon us, with the virtual Emmys kicking off on Monday morning, 10am AEST.
While there’s certain to be some wild and wacky fashion moments during the ceremony, sadly for the amatuer fashion critics among us, there will be no traditional red carpet.
Thankfully, we have years of looks to cast judgment over.

While the Emmys red carpet is typically a more subdued affair compared to the Grammys or Oscars, the TV stars who come out for the awards show are known for making the most of their red carpet ride.
Let’s take a walk down disastrous outfit memory lane.
GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE, 2019
Drowning in folds of red and white fabric, Christie’s 2019 look was throwing very Jesus vibes.
ARIEL WINTER, 2017
Rocking the popular evening loin cloth trend with dangerously high thigh splits, this gown is a little bit Middle Ages, a little bit 90s teen witch.
While Modern Family star Ariel Winter’s 2017 choice wasn’t quite a winner on the night, her pins do look incredible.
LENA DUNHAM, 2014
Business up top, bonkers down below.
While we’re sure this dress was loads of fun to put on for the evening, Girls star Dunham looks like she’s wearing a bed.
Is anyone else getting a grown up Cindy-Lou from The Grinch vibe from this outfit or is it just me?
COURTNEY PELDON, 2004
In what can only described as an early 2000s abomination, it looks a little bit like Courtney Peldon of Boston Public fame witnessed a car crash on her way to the event and little bits of debris from the road became stuck to her body.
Is she also tied up in a lanyard?
PATRICIA HEATON, 1999
Props to anyone game enough to wear aeroplane slippers to the Emmys.
What a pose from Everybody Loves Raymond star Patricia Heaton.
BAI LING, 2003
A bold choice before naked dresses on the red carpet became standard, this teardrop cut-out bandaid-coloured number paired with heeled gladiator sandals from Bai Ling of Lost fame drawers the eye straight to the belly button and then straight to her toes.
THE OSBOURNES
The Osbournes! Hibiscus! Pink bra!
You’ve gotta love Kelly for always making a statement. We think this one is: You CAN turn old pairs of tights into a dress.
TRACEY ULLMAN, 1988
Comedian Tracey Ullman looking very “tarot card reader goes to a conference”.
BRAD AND JEN, 1999
Iconic sunnies, iconic hair. We stan Brad and Jen always but can’t help but wonder how anyone ever thought sunglasses like this were cool in the 90s.
PORTIA DE ROSSI, 1999
A subdued Angelina leg from a pre-Ellen DeGeneres Portia de Rossi, before the Angelina leg was a thing.
It’s a shame she got her hem caught in a blender before she arrived.
GEENA DAVIS, 2000
Geena Davis wearing a sheer optical illusion with heeled thongs is a real mood.
We should hate it, but we don’t.
HEIDI KLUM, 2015
In some sort of magic of the deep dark arts, Heidi seems to be wearing three different dresses while also wearing very little. The colour is dreamy, but it’s a no from us.
CHER, 2000
What a way to end this gallery.
Cher rocking a disco Dracula look is the weekend energy we all need.
