Schitts Creek swept the comedy categories, Succession and Watchmen won big and we were even treated to a mini-Friends reunion at this year's Emmys.
Host Jimmy Kimmel did a commendable job keeping the energy up without the aid of the usual live audience - but the funnyman did cop a backlash with one questionable quip about ICE, the US immigration enforcement agency.
We've live blogged all the action throughout the day below - including a few memorable Jennifer Aniston appearances, an exciting upset in the Best Actress in a Drama series category and in unfortunate technical gaffe during the In Memoriam segment...
Updates
The final award goes to...
…Succession, picking up the gong for Most Outstanding Drama Series. It seems those accepting the award are doing so from a hotel suite – because the in-room phone rings midway through their speech (it's room service).
And that's it! Kimmel bids us all goodnight: "I'll see you all at the sad Zoom afterparty, meeting ID 4517581."
Best Supporting awards
Billy Crudup wins Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his scene-stealing turn in The Morning Show.
Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series goes to Julia Garner from Ozark, who certainly got more dressed up for the occasion than her dressing gowned-companion:
Zendaya's surprise Emmy win
It's her first nomination, and she's taken it out: Zendaya just won Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work in Euphoria, beating out established players like Sandra Oh, Laura Linney and Jennifer Aniston (Aniston in particular looked thrilled the young star had taken it out).
Accepting the award at home, it's safe to say Zendaya and her team are going to have a good night:
"She's younger than Baby Yoda and she already has an Emmy!" Kimmel says of the 24-year-old star, who becomes the youngest person ever to win in this category.
After that exciting upset from Euphoria, it's back to Succession, which picks up the awards for Drama Writing and Directing.
We're on to the Drama awards
…and Jeremy Strong picks up the Best Actor in a Drama gong for Succession. Come for the award speech, stay for the adorable pussy bow shirt:
Also nominated in the same category – for the same show – was Brian Cox, who looked just THRILLED to have been beaten by his co-star (that's Brian, second from left):
Friends reunion
There was a mini-Friends reunion as Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston all appeared together for a sketch during the broadcast.
Jimmy Kimmel crossed to Aniston's house to make sure she had made it home safely after she had earlier helped present an award at the Staples Centre.
Aniston, wearing a bathrobe, said she was watching the broadcast with friends as Kudrow and Cox appeared on the screen.
Randomly, Jason Bateman also popped up in Aniston's house, not sure why.
Unfortunate RGB audio fail
The audio was missing as host Jimmy Kimmel paid tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, who died on the weekend.
The audio was restored just as singer H.E.R performed Nothing Compares 2 U for the Emmys in memoriam segment.
The segment ended with footage of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman who died in August from colon cancer.
Toni Collette misses out
Bad luck, Toni.
The Aussie actress was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie for her role in Unbelievable.
Instead the Emmy went to Uzo Aduba for her work in Mrs. America.
Aduba was wearing a Breonna Taylor t-shirt as she accepted her award.
Don't feel too bad for Toni, by the way. She won an Emmy back in 2009 for United States of Tara.
Watchmen's winning big
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II wins Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for Watchmen. That's three out of five possible awards for Watchmen so far.
The Hulk beats Wolverine
Mark Ruffalo won the Best Actor in a Limited Series Award, beating out Aussie Hugh Jackman, also nominated. "I guess we know who wins in a battle between The Hulk and Wolverine," quipped Kimmel.
Kimmel's controversial joke
After losing to Englishman John Oliver in the Variety Series category, Jimmy Kimmel quipped he'd dob rival chat show host in to ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement). The joke hasn't gone down well -particularly coming just days after a whistleblower alleged mass hysterectomies had taken place at a US immigration detention centre:
not jimmy kimmel making an ICE joke…
kids in cages and women being forced to have hysterectomies is not a joke. #Emmys
