Julia Louis-Dreyfus breaks down during emotional Emmys speech
VEEP actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus could barely conceal her emotions when accepting her Emmy Award today.
SHE may have won for her sterling comic turn in Veep, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus delivered one of the most poignant moments in her Emmy speech with a heartbreaking speech that flipped suddenly from bitingly sarcastic to deeply emotional.
“While I’m apologising, I’d like to take the opportunity to apologise for the current political climate,” she deadpanned to cheers from the audience as she accepted the Lead Actress gong for her political comedy series.

“I think Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire but it now feels like a sobering documentary. So I promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it.”
Then suddenly turning serious, the former Seinfeld star broke down as she ended her speech by dedicating the award to her father, who died on Friday aged 84.
“I’m so glad he liked Veep because his opinion was the one that really mattered,” she said.
Later on in the evening, fellow winner Patton Oswalt made one of his first public appearances following the death of his wife, crime writer Michelle McNamara, in April.
“I want to share this with two people: My daughter Alice who is waiting at home. And the other one is waiting somewhere else, I hope,” he said as he accepted the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
