Emmy nominations are full of snubs and surprises
THE Emmy nominations are out, and full of nods to usual suspects, a few glaring omissions, and more than a few more surprises.

To the snubs …
The biggest shock has to be the snubbing of Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany, which saw the saw and the actor start trending worldwide on Twitter. The much-loved actor, who plays 12 characters on the hit show, is a fan favourite and her exclusion from this year’s Emmys race (she was also overlooked last year) is truly gobsmacking.

The Good Wife had arguably its best season yet, but the show (and its writing staff) were woefully overlooked (Julianna Margulies, Josh Charles and Christine Baranski restored the balance by scoring acting nods).
The Simpsons was overlooked in the Outstanding Animated Program category for the first time in 20 years.
Beating out the Fox series, which has been on the air for a record 25 years, was Archer, Bob’s Burgers, Futurama, South Park, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Dean Norris. Norris’ performance as DEA agent Hank Schrader throughout Breaking Bad’s run has been a thing of glory (particularly in the final season), unless you’re an Emmy voter.
Despite the fact that Mad Men may not have had its best season, Elisabeth Moss is a perennial Emmys favourite … until this year.
Finally, you have to feel for Mariska Hargitay. Fifteen years into her role as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, the star delivered perhaps her best-ever work during this season’s premiere.
Totally underrated.
To the surprises …
Kate Mara. Given the actor lasted barely an episode in the second season of House of Cards, this is the biggest surprise since Kevin Spacey pushed her in front of a train.
Jeff Daniels. Most people hated The Newsroom, except for him.
Downton Abbey. We’re not saying the show has jumped the shark (Maggie Smith saves it from that), but how does it continue to get nominated, long past its prime?
The Orange Is The New Black cast. Actually, nominations for Kate Mulgrew (Red), Laverne Cox (Sophia), Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes) and Natasha Lyonne (Nicky) are not really a surprise, we’re just completely ecstatic they’re being recognised. Go Litchfield Prison!
