Chris Pratt labelled ‘tone deaf’ for joking about the US election on Instagram

Chris Pratt has come under fire on social media for joking about the US election, with followers labelling him “insensitive” and “tone deaf”.

Chris Pratt has been getting heat on social media for his recent jokes about voting.

The Marvel star, 41, was promoting his Pixar film Onward and encouraging his fans on Instagram to vote for this year’s People’s Choice Awards, but many people online felt the comments were poorly timed considering it’s less than a month away from the 2020 presidential election.

“With all that’s going on in the world it is more important than ever that you vote,” Pratt wrote.

“Just ask any celebrity. They will tell you. Every day. Several times a day. To vote. But me? I will tell you EXACTLY who to vote for.

“The heroes before us did not spill their blood only to have their sacrifices wasted by your apathy,” he continued. “The upcoming 2020 People’s Choice Awards is the most consequential vote in the history of mankind times a million infinity.”

“Vote for #Onward for family movie of the year,” he concluded. “Or else. You WILL die. No hyperbole. Click the link in my bio. Let your voice be heard.”

Pratt’s comments section was flooded with both negative and positive praise.

“This is super insensitive. Read the room. Oh wait you did and decided to mock people,” another said.

Someone else pointed out, “I wish I found this funny.”

While another followed pointed out, “YIKES. Imagine the amount of privilege one person can have to write this tone-deaf post.”

Others came to Pratt’s defence.

“Geez. Everyone really has lost their sense of humour. This is just a lighthearted post and there’s nothing wrong with that. No one’s going to take the election less seriously because Chris Pratt posted about the People’s Choice Awards,” reasoned one person.

“He is just trying to make a light hearted joke because times are tough right now,” wrote someone else.

Another said, “People literally are so sensitive about everything, grow a backbone and take a joke. It’s madness.”

Pratt has not officially endorsed a candidate, but in 2017 he told Men’s Fitness he didn’t feel “represented” by either Democrats or Republicans.

“I really feel there’s common ground out there that’s missed because we focus on the things that separate us,” he said at the time. “You’re either the red state or the blue state, the left or the right. Not everything is politics. And maybe that’s something I’d want to help bridge, because I don’t feel represented by either side.”
