From outlandish costumes to trends that just haven’t aged well, here’s a look at some of the event’s most shocking looks ahead of Wednesday night’s ceremony.

Kyle Sandilands’ girlfriend Imogen Anthony is used to stealing the spotlight from her shock jock partner with her outlandish fashion sense.

But nothing tops her 2016 ARIA look which saw Anthony wear a graffitied dress, bright dreadlocks and a nose ring.

Jessica Mauboy’s 2015 outfit was also memorable, with the singer wearing a ill-fitting suit with bizarre ruffled sleeves.

Before she disappeared from the spotlight Sia made a splash at 2010 ARIAs in an outfit that certainly caught the eye.

But the gold sequinned outfit missed the mark, with an armful of colourful bangles doing little to improve the dress.

Speaking of Sia, former Triple J host Matt Okine dressed as the singer while his colleague Alex Dyson went as Chet Faker in 2014.

Meanwhile stars like Ella Hooper have fallen victim to fashion looks that haven’t aged well, with the Killing Heidi singer embraced the 2000s dress over jeans trend at the 2002 ARIA awards.

In 2012 New Zealand singer Kimbra went by the adage “more is more” in an eye-catching dress by Anna Langdon.

In 2001, singer Keith Urban appeared to pay tribute to Elvis Presley wearing a pinstriped suit and outstretched collar.

Last year Kirin J Callinan made waves, not for his quirky kilt ensemble but because he decided to flash photographers on the red carpet.

The musician had to face court over an obscene exposure charge because of the stunt, something Callinan later said he regretted.

Alli Simpson gave new meaning to the term pretty in pink at last year’s ARIAs, wearing a sheer trench coat that makes us feel overheated just looking at it.

Also not letting the warmer temperature get in the way of a good outfit was model Kate Peck, who wore a white sequinned and fur extravaganza at the 2014 red carpet.
