If you’ve woken up well after your alarm was supposed to go off, your car has broken down and you can’t call anyone or you’re struggling to transfer some money at the checkout because you haven’t got any cash – you’re not alone.

We’ve all been there and can put it down to one thing: A flat phone battery.

Smartphones are now essential to go about our day, and running out of power is a quick way to ruin it. Luckily, many phones are compatible with magnetic power banks. This is an easy solution to charge your devices on the go.

Our favourite is the Belkin BoostCharge Pro, which magnetically charges one device and simultaneously powers an extra two with its built-in USB ports. That means it charges three devices at once and provides up to 35 hours of power.

We also love the Anker 622 MagGo with its compact design and built-in kickstand to charge your phone upright.

Read on to find all the best magnetic power banks on the market to save your skin when your battery runs flat.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MAGNETIC POWER BANK

Compatibility: The vast majority of magnetic power banks are suited to MagSafe products, and many are now tailored to Qi2 tech. This will mainly consist of iPhones from the 12 series and above. Some can be used for wireless earphones and smart watches, but they are few and far between. Make sure you check to see if your device will be compatible with these chargers before buying.

Power and capacity: The power output of a charger is important, and the higher the wattage the more powerful it is. Most magnetic power banks can produce 15 watts of power for iPhones and five watts for wireless earbuds. You should also check what the battery capacity is. The higher the mAh, the more it will charge your device before the power bank itself will need a recharge.

Portability: Most magnetic power banks are portable and wireless, attaching themselves to the back of your phone. However some larger options need to be connected to a power socket or USB-C cord.

Price: These are not typically cheap investments. Some quality models can come under $100, however they tend to have a smaller battery capacity and take longer to charge. Weigh up how much you want to spend and if it’s worth splurging on a more advanced model.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO MAGNETIC POWER BANKS WORK?

MagSafe and Qi2 compatible devices are built with magnets around their charging coils. The same goes for magnetic power banks. When the coils align, they grip onto each other to allow power transfer through an electrical current. When they are pulled apart, this electrical current ceases and the power transfer ends.

WHAT IS MAGSAFE?

MagSafe is a layout of magnets in a ring shape specifically in Apple iPhones from the 12 series and above. You can also buy MagSafe cases to pair magnetic power banks and chargers without needing to remove the phone’s protector case.

WHAT IS QI2?

Qi2 is one of the more recent developments in wireless charging. Inspired by Apple’s MagSafe, they are magnets placed in a ring shape to connect to a range of smart devices and not just those created by Apple.

These compatible chargers and power banks produce up to 15 watts of power, which is an increase from 7.5 watts produced by the original Qi technology.

WHAT IS AN MAH?

An mAh stands for milliampere-hour, which is a measurement of power produced over a period of time. The larger the mAh, the more power it has before needing to be recharged.

The highest mAh you’ll typically find in a magnetic power bank is 15,000 and can normally charge several devices before running out of power.

IS MAGNETIC CHARGING BAD FOR MY PHONE?

Magnetic power banks are no less safe than your regular charger, as long as it is compatible with your device.

While they can be warm to the touch, they are built with safety systems to prevent overheating and overcharging, so your devices will be safe throughout the charging process. However, it is often recommended by manufacturers to unplug and stop charging your device when it reaches full battery capacity.

CAN YOU TAKE A MAGNETIC POWER BANK ON A PLANE?

For the most part, power banks up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) can be taken on board a plane inside carry-on baggage. One Wh converts roughly to 270 mAh. Most magnetic power banks don’t exceed 15,000mAh, so they should be allowed on board, but you should always check with your airline what their allowances are.

You should also not pack a power bank in your check-in luggage, as they can be a fire risk.
