Apple’s latest announcement is sure to gain major kudos for cash-strapped Aussies.
The tech giant has unveiled its latest smartphone, the iPhone 16e - the newest, low-cost member of the iPhone 16 family. The base model starts at just $999, which is $400 cheaper than the cheapest iPhone 16 (priced from $1399).
With eligible iPhone trade-ins, you could get your hands on a brand new iPhone 16e for as little as $729.
That isn’t a typo.
It offers great value with its ultra-fast A18 chip, Apple Intelligence (AI), long battery life, and 48MP 2-in-1 camera system.
“We’re so excited for iPhone 16se to complete the line-up as a powerful, more affordable option to bring the iPhone experience to even more people,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of worldwide iPhone product marketing.
The iPhone 16e will be available in elegant matte black and white finishes, with a wide range of colourful cases and accessories.
You can pre-order the iPhone 16e from Saturday February 22nd, it’ll be available for sale form from Friday February 28th.

What You Need To Know
The iPhone 16e may be the budget-friendly model, but it has the same level of beautiful design and durability as a regular iPhone.
Its OLED display, with the same contrast ratio as the iPhone 16, is perfect for watching shows, playing games, or reading. Plus, it’s built for Apple Intelligence, which unlocks powerful new capabilities to enhance your experience.
Apple’s cameras have always been a standout feature, and the iPhone 16e’s advanced 2-in-1 camera system includes Night mode and Portrait mode, so you can capture clear photos day or night.
There’s also impressive video capabilities, with the iPhone 16e recording in 4K with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps, plus it records in Spatial Audio mode, which delivers immersive listening with AirPods, Apple Vision Pro, or a surround sound system.
The iPhone 16e also has a super-sized battery life - up to six hours longer than iPhone 11 and up to 12 hours longer than iPhone se.
It’s the best battery life in an iPhone of this size.
The only feature sacrificed in this cheaper model is the MagSafe charging system. Although it will still be compatible with Qi wireless chargers.
It also doesn’t have a home button and its 6.1” Super Retina XDR display is slightly smaller than other models in the iPhone range.
Forgivable exclusions given its $800 less than the iPhone Pro.
