Five months after it first teased its next generation of smartphones, Google has unveiled both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro – and they are just as polished as we had hoped.

Both phones run on Google’s powerful new Tensor G2 chip and will arrive with new smart features, including the ability to better represent all skin tones in night-time photography.

The Pixel 7 series will also feature a VPN by Google One at no extra cost to users (coming to Australia later this year), making them the first smartphones to offer a free VPN.

Both the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro come in a new aluminium enclosure made of 100 per cent recycled materials. They also feature an upgraded metal camera bar that’s flatter than last year’s design, making the phones easier to hold. Both models come in three colour options – Obsidian (Black) and Snow (White), along with one additional colour for the 7 and 7 Pro respectively.

Each model also runs on Google’s powerful new Tensor G2 chipset and ships with Android 13, so we can expect them to be both snappy and seamless to use with the rest of the Pixel family.

Featuring a 6.3-inch display and smaller bezels, the base Google Pixel 7 is slightly smaller and lighter than last year’s Google Pixel 6 – giving it a smaller profile while packing in a range of new features.

The Pixel 7 Pro is meanwhile Google’s “most advanced phone yet,” according to the brand, with its large 6.7-inch OLED screen, 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 1,500 nits.

There’s a 10.8MP front camera and a triple-rear camera system on the Pixel 7 Pro, consisting of a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide lens, a 50MP f/1.85 wide lens and 48MP telephoto lens with up to 5x optical zoom. The Pixel 7 meanwhile packs the same main and ultra-wide cameras as the 7 Pro.

Cameras have long been the most impressive feature on Pixel phones, with their processing and modes rivalling, if not beating out, both Apple and Samsung. The Pixel 7 range doesn’t disappoint here either, with Google bringing in even more photography features for the new lineup.

In addition to an improved version of Real Tone that is made to better represent all skin tones in lowlight settings, there’s also a Photo Unblur function which can also unblur old photos you’ve taken, even if you didn’t snap them on a Pixel.

A Cinematic Blur mode meanwhile allows you to artfully blur the background in videos, while Night Sight now only needs half the normal exposure time to pick out sharp lowlight images. There’s also a Macro Focus mode on the Pixel 7 Pro which will allow it to focus on a subject as close as three centimetres away.

In addition to a fingerprint reader, both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will now feature Face Unlock so you can open your phone at a glance, similar to iPhone. Both models will also get VPN by Google One at no extra cost, with the feature expected to arrive this December.

In terms of battery life, both phones offer over 24-hours of battery life or up to 72-hours of life when using the Extreme Battery Saver mode. Both models also support wireless charging and can charge up to 50 per cent in around 30-minutes.

It arrives with a bunch of Google features built-in, including Google maps, Google Wallet, the Google Assistant and a wrist-optimised version of Google Home for controlling your smart home devices.

Thanks to its acquisition of Fitbit, Google has been able to bring across all of the baseline Fitbit health and tracking features to the watch – such as heart monitoring, ECG, sleep tracking and exercise tracking – through the built-in Fitbit app. It also includes six months of Fitbit Premium for free (usually priced at $15 per month), giving you access to even more health and fitness features.

The Pixel Watch works with all Android 8.0+ phones and is available in two connectivity configurations: Bluetooth/Wi-Fi only or built-in 4G LTE. While the watch itself only comes in the one size, it arrives with both a small and large band in the box, effectively suiting wrist sizes from 130mm up to around 210mm.

Additional features include up to 24-hours of battery life, an always-on display and the ability to get back to 50 per cent battery life with a 30-minute charge.
