WHAT IS SINGLES’ DAY?
The story goes that Singles’ Day was first started by Nanjing University students in the early ‘90s, who exchanged gifts with one another as an anti-Valentines Day gesture.
But why November 11? The date was chosen as the 11s represent “single sticks” or “bare sticks”, which is Chinese slang for bachelors.
Businesses decided to take advantage of this opportunity by offering special discounts to mark the occasion.
WHEN IS SINGLES’ DAY?
Singles’ Day, or China Singles’ Day as it’s also known, is always held on November 11.
This year, Singles’ Day falls on a Monday and kicks off before the Aussie sales event, Click Frenzy's The Main Event (November 12 to November 15) - meaning many local retailers have chosen to offer shoppers deals that cover the two events.
WHAT BRANDS AND RETAILERS CAN YOU EXPECT TO SEE ON SALE?
Singles’ Day isn’t limited to certain categories – you can shop massive savings across fashion, tech, home, beauty and more.
Although the sale event is known for being one of the few times of year where you’ll see designer fashion brands and stockists reduce their prices.
WHAT ARE SOME SHOPPING TIPS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF SINGLES’ DAY?
Considering the attention from both international and local markets – and the fact that Singles’ Day is a one-day event – it’s likely you’re going to need to act quickly to snatch up savings before items sell out.
A couple of tips to remember before and during the day include:
- Create any user accounts before the day. Many, if not all, e-commerce sites will require you to have a user account before checkout, or even before making a wishlist. Don’t let other shoppers checkout with that last dress in your size because you were digging around for your credit card to upload details.
- Make a wishlist beforehand, and for more than one retailer. If there’s a particular item you’ve had your eyes on for a while, we recommend adding it to competing retailers’ wishlists before the day. Come November 11, rather than sift through information about various deals at different sites, you can check back to your wishlists to see applied discounts, and know for certain you’re getting the best deal possible.
WHAT OTHER SALE OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE TO LOOK OUT FOR?
Singles’ Day is one of several huge shopping events taking place from now until the end of the year. Come the end of November, both local and international retailers will be massively discounting their wares for Black Friday weekend, which ends in Cyber Monday.
Only a month later, shoppers can get their hands on more deals, courtesy of Boxing Day, arguably still the most-renowned sales event in Australia.
