WHAT IS BOXING DAY?
Today Boxing Day might be synonymous with eating leftovers, shopping sales and watching cricket, however, its origins were for different reasons entirely.
University of Sydney religious studies professor Carole Cusack previously told the ABC marking December 26 dates back to the Middle Ages in Britain when “the servants all had to work on Christmas Day”.
“Their servitude meant that they had to put the needs of the people they worked for first,” she said, adding that Boxing Day became “their time to spend with their family”.
According to the BBC, the date became known as Boxing Day during the 19th century because it was also when the wealthy would box up presents to give to those less fortunate.
Today Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Australia and other Commonwealth countries.
It’s been a key date for retail sales since the 1990s, however, has been overtaken by Black Friday in Australia in recent years.
