For a recent two week trip to South East Asia, I took the American Tourister Light Max Spinner in Medium and I can confirm this is an excellent suitcase. This suitcase is honestly as light as a feather - the Medium I have weighs just 3.2 kg - which not only means you can maximise your suitcase weight (overpackers rejoice) but the super lightweight means the case is easy to handle and navigate through airports and hotels, even when it’s filled to the brim. On that, the interior is roomy and spacious.

You can fit so much in it; I had more than enough space for a two week trip, with extra space leftover for shopping which never happens with me. The lining is sturdy, with your standard compartments for organisation, including a zip storage pocket on the side for bits and bobs. There’s also an expandable midsection and a built in TSA zip lock - a great touch so you don’t have to worry about security or buying your own lock. The double wheels were smooth and glided well over roads, even rickety footpaths.

The hard shell exterior is strong and solid; after a two week trip through multiple airports, there were no dents or scratches, which I was very surprised about considering I have the suitcase in black. All in all, I highly recommend this suitcase and found it to be great value for the price.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SUITCASE

When buying a suitcase, it's important to consider these factors:

  • Size: You'll want to make sure your suitcase is the appropriate size for the duration of your trip and within the size guidelines of the airline. Each airline has a different guideline so make sure to do you research before hitting purchase.
  • Weight: Most airlines also have a weight guideline, so if you want to get the most out of packing, make sure your suitcase isn't heavy when empty  - do your due diligence and check the weight of the suitcase you're eyeing as it will be easier for you to carry and manoeuvre around the airport.
  • Security: Ideally, you'll want a suitcase with Transport Security Administration (TSA) locks. TSA locks are designed to be opened with a master key by security officers so they can easily check your belongings and relock it without damaging your suitcase.
  • Storage: Organisation is key when it comes to packing so it's good to look into suitcases with ample packing space and organisational pockets, and maybe even removable laundry bags or even padding or lining to protect your belongings.
  • Expandability: If you're a serial overpacker or know you'll be doing a whole lotta souvenir shopping, an expandable suitcase will be your best friend. Expandable suitcases are the best luggage type because they feature a panel that can be unzipped to offer at least 10 per cent extra packing space.
  • Durability: Look for a hard-shell suitcase that is made from plastics like ABS or polycarbonate as they're much more durable and able to protection against rain, plus a hard-shell suitcase won't get squished as easily as a soft-shell luggage.
  • Handles: Make sure your suitcase has two or more durable handles on each side of your suitcase as they will make lifting your suitcase so much easier when putting it on a weighing scale, taking it off of a luggage carousel and more.
  • Wheels: If you want to glide through the airport with ease, a suitcase with smooth rolling wheels is your best option. Unlike suitcases or rolling bags with two wheels, bags with four spinner-wheels won't have you worrying about lugging it at an angle and you can easily wheel it right next to you.
  • Brand: Knowing which luggage brands you can trust is important, and many people generally look at July, Samsonite, American Tourister and Antler (just to name a few) as the best luggage brands.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT TYPE OF SUITCASE IS BEST FOR OVERSEAS TRAVEL?

According to CHOICE, you want to make sure your suitcase is lightweight, the right size for your trip, has a sturdy construction, has an extendable handle, is expandable, has wheels, zips, external straps, both internal and external pockets and is water resistant.

You may also want to consider whether a soft or hard case would be better suited — CHOICE recommends opting for a softside suitcase if you want something more lightweight that you can squeeze lots of items in.

By contrast, hardside bags are more rigid – meaning you won’t be able to cram your suitcase with end of trip purchases as easily, however, the case will provide more protection for your items.

WHAT SIZE CAN YOUR CARRY-ON SUITCASE BE?

What size carry on suitcase you are allowed to bring with you on an aeroplane will vary airline to airline.

According to Qantas, carry-on suitcases for both international and domestic flights must be no bigger than H56cm x W36cm x D23cm.

WHAT’S THE MAXIMUM WEIGHT FOR A CHECK-IN SUITCASE WHEN FLYING?

There are a number of rules and regulations regarding the weight limit for your suitcases, so you should definitely double check your airline's weight limit as rules vary from each airline. Qantas says for all economy flights (excluding North and South America), checked baggage must not weigh more than 30 kgs.

For North and South American flights, the weight limit of your checked bags must not exceed 32 kgs.
