HOW BIG IS THE GREAT BARRIER REEF?

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park covers 344,400 sqkm in the Coral Sea and contains some 3000 coral reefs, 600 continental islands, 300 coral cays and about 150 inshore mangrove islands. It stretches from the tip of Queensland down to Bundaberg in the south. Its depth ranges from 35m in inshore waters, through to plunging depths of more than 2000m.

It includes the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem, and is home to around 600 types of soft and hard corals, more than 100 species of jellyfish, 3000 varieties of molluscs, 1625 types of fish, 133 varieties of sharks and rays, and more than 30 species of whales and dolphins.

HOW DO I GET TO THE GREAT BARRIER REEF?

There are plenty of places to stay around the reef, from tropical islands like Hamilton Island and Fitzroy Island, to mainland cities like Port Douglas, Townsville and Cairns. Many tours to the reef depart from port cities.

The closest international airport is Cairns, and other airport options are Proserpine in the Whitsunday region and Hamilton Island.

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE REEF?

Reef tours operate all year round but there are two distinct seasons in Far North Queensland that may influence when you choose to visit.

Dry season between April to November is a good time to visit the region, as temperatures are still warm but humidity and rainfall is lower. Daily temperatures during this time rage from 18 to 29C and the ocean temperature is still warm, about 24C. This is also considered an off-peak time, so it’s when you’ll typically find flights and accommodation prices and their lowest, and crowds smaller on the islands and reefs.

The peak summer season is November to March and it’s deliciously hot and humid. But as it is the wet season, which means rain (the region cops an average of 2000mm of rain each year) and the threat of cyclones. Cyclones can arrive with only a few days notice and tour operations will be suspended if a cyclone strikes. But the wet weather has the benefit of creating lush rainforests and spectacular waterfalls throughout the region.
