Friends issued Emily Blunt a chilling warning that making A Quiet Place would put a strain on her marriage. “Some people were like, ‘You’re going to be divorced by the end of it,’” Blunt told Vanity Fair of being directed by her husband John Krasinski. “But we quickly learned we work really well together. We discovered new sides to each other that go beyond us being a married couple.” Far from being a romance killer, the A-List couple found the experience so rewarding for their careers (and their relationship) that they returned to make a sequel a few years later.
Also proving to be a formidable team is Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas who, having first gone toe-to-toe in the 1995 movie Desperado, have once again channelled their palpable repartee into the animated movie Puss in Boots: Last Wish. And then there’s co-stars and pals Tom Hanks and Sally Field who (somewhat strangely) played lovers before memorably teaming up to star as mother and child in Forrest Gump.
It’s this sort of screen chemistry that makes movie magic in so many of the new and nostalgic film titles available on Paramount+.

Best New Movies on Paramount+
A Quiet Place
It may have been his first tilt at writing and directing a horror movie but John Krasinski managed to get the seal of approval from the master of suspense himself. Steven King praised the nail-biter in a social media post saying: “A Quiet Place is an extraordinary piece of work. Terrific acting, but the main thing is the SILENCE, and how it makes the camera’s eye open wide in a way few movies manage.” Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Blunt and Krasinski play parents trying to keep their family safe from creatures who hunt by sound. As such, only 90 words of dialogue is spoken –mostly whispered – in the entire movie, which spawned a sequel (again featuring Blunt) and a prequel starring Lupita Nyong’o.

One Life
This film is based on the life of Holocaust hero Nicky Winton. You may not instantly recognise Winton’s name, but chances are you will have seen his face. While a guest on a 1988 talk show, Winton was stunned when the studio audience seated around him revealed themselves to be some of the (now grown) 669 children he had saved from the Nazis decades earlier. The clip from that moment regularly goes viral and now his story has been turned into this inspiring film starring Anthony Hopkins as Winton.
Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter | Duration: 110 minutes
Forrest Gump
In the space of six years, Sally Field went from Tom Hanks’ love interest in Punchline to playing his mother in Forrest Gump. This is often used as an example of Hollywood ageism, but Field argues “it’s not a fair example” because she was playing Forrest’s mother through different stages of the character’s life, with prosthetics used to age her once Hanks took over from Haley Joel Osment, who played Forest as a boy. While the analogy might be wrong, Field has acknowledged that the sentiment is correct because: “ageism is still is going on…and it’s most particularly towards women.” Interestingly, Hanks, who won his second Oscar playing Forest, was not the first choice. John Travolta, Chevy Chase, Matthew Broderick and Bill Murray were all contenders while Winston Groom, who wrote the book envisaged John Goodman as the earnest Alabama man who finds himself in some of the biggest historical events of 20th century.
Cast: Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise, Robyn Wright | Duration: 2 hours and 12 minutes
Twister
A TV weatherman’s (Bill Paxton) passion for storm chasing -- and his tornado-obsessed ex (Helen Hunt) -- is rekindled when his efforts to get her to sign their divorce papers takes him on a death-defying race through wild weather. A reboot of this 1995 thrill ride recently hit cinemas with a raft of new characters dodging tornados, and featured a cameo from Paxton’s son, James. For James, whose father died in 2017, being part of the sequel was a meaningful way to keep his father’s memory alive and honour his legacy. “Twister was a real triumphant moment for my dad in his career; he had been working a very long time to get to that point. It’s a star-making turn; you can’t be at the helm of anything bigger, and it was a really happy time in Dad’s life.”
Cast: Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt | Duration: 113 minutes
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
As a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Salma Hayek confessed she sometimes lied to her host and told him the movie she was publicising was great when she knew it wasn’t. But her Puss in Boots sequel was different and she enthused: “No, this one is for real. It’s really good, guys!” The animated film, which is a spin-off to the Shrek franchise, once again reunites Hayek with her old pal, Antonio Banderas who she first steamed up the screen with in the 1995 movie Desperado. Banderas reflected of their decades-long friendship: “Well, we practically started together in the industry here in America. We were coming from our own countries, so we met each other at the beginning of this road.” In The Last Wish, the suave Puss in Boots is lured out of retirement and join up with his old love Kitty (Hayek) for one last adventure to find a magical wishing star.
Cast: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Florence Pugh | Duration: 102 minutes
No Time to Spy: A Loud House Movie
A spin-off to the animated series about Lincoln Loud, the middle child (and only boy) in a family of 11, this made-for-TV movie follows the Loud clan as they go on holiday for a tropical wedding only to become entangled in a spy plot. It’s the sort of whacky adventure that fans of this series will know and love. Interestingly, unlike many animated shows, the Loud family have actually aged since the series debuted in 2016 with eldest child Lori graduating high school and the baby of the family Lily starting preschool in more recent seasons. Meanwhile Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson have not aged a day in more than 37 years.
Bumblebee
With his official retirement from wrestling looming on the horizon, John Cena will continue putting his bulging biceps to use as a movie action hero instead. “I just think it’s time to close that chapter as I’ll be 48 next year,” he explained of exiting the ring in 2025. Thankfully, like The Rock before him, Cena has a successful career as a Hollywood action man to keep him busy. Since making his debut in the 2006 movie The Marine, Cena has made in action film series such as Fast and the Furious and Suicide Squad. In Bumblebee, a prequel to the Transformers franchise, Cena plays an agent for a secret military operation charged with hunting down a refugee robot with the ability to transform into a yellow Volkswagen. A modern spin on the animated favourite, Iron Giant, Bumblebee is aided by a teenager (Hailee Steinfeld).
Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena | Duration: 114 minutes
Mean Girls
Which of the Mean Girls class of 2004 would you like to see return for the musical adaptation? For fans of the original, it is akin to asking someone to choose between children. But for the film’s creator and star Tina Fey, it was a no-brainer – Lindsay Lohan. “I felt like if I could only get one person as a surprise, the original movie is really Lindsay’s movie,” Fey said. “As great as they all are, she’s the heart of that movie.” Lohan, who played Cady in the original, makes her appearance towards the end of the film as a brainy adjudicator in a Maths competition. Joining OGs Lohan and Fey in the 2024 version are Australian actor Angourie Rice as Cady 2.0 and The Sex Lives of College Girls’ star Renee Rapp, who reprises her Broadway rendition of the Queen Bee, Regina George.
Cast: Angourie Rice, Renee Rapp, Tina Fey | Duration: 112 minutes
Best Horror Movies on Paramount+
Scream
The original film starring Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox breathed new life into the dying horror genre when it debuted in 1996. Self-aware, funny and pretty darn scary, the film was penned by Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson to satirise iconic movies like Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. Scream — which follows a high school student (Campbell) who is terrorised by a knife-wielding serial killer in a mask — was so successful it spawned seven films (the first four of which are all available on Paramount+) and a TV series. A seventh film in development that will see both Williamson and Campbell returning to the franchise.
Cast: Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell | Duration: 2 hours 2 minutes

Tar
Cate Blanchett won universal praise (and many more awards for her trophy case) playing a talented but abusive conductor in Tar. To prepare for her role, Blanchett memorised the entire script (from front to back), learned German, took piano lessons and watched as many conductors as she could so that she could better understand the profession. But it is not so much Blanchett’s mastery of the music that is memorable here but rather her character’s monstrous misuse of power. Blanchett has said that her character is simply a product of an environment which “enables, invites and often enshrines and rewards monstrous behaviour.” You be the judge.
Cast: Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss, Noemie Merlant | Duration: 2 hours 38 minutes
She Said
On the other side of investigations into abuse of power we have She Said, which is based on the true story of how New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan) unearthed the shocking details of Harvey Weinstein’s revoltingly predatory behaviour. Actresses Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow –who were among the 100 victims to speak out about the powerful Hollywood producer – make cameos as themselves. At the time, Paltrow and Judd’s involvement in Kantor and Twohey’s story was instrumental in turning the tide against Weinstein and to him being jailed. In April, however, the US high court overturned Weinstein’s rape conviction. Upon hearing the news, Judd told the BBC: “Oftentimes survivors say that the betrayal and the moral injury we suffer within the system is worse than the sexual body invasion we experienced in the first place. We know what happened and the truth is consistent.” Mulligan told EW that She Said “opens the door for conversation” and has led to even more women opening up about their own experiences with assault and abuse.

Best Docos on Paramount+
Let the Canary Sing
Although she initially wasn’t sold on the title or the idea of seeing her life played out on screen, Cyndi Lauper eventually relented and agreed to being the subject of Alison Ellwood’s documentary Let the Canary Sing. Explaining her reluctance, Lauper told Variety: “I didn’t want to be Saint Cyndi. I’m not perfect. I say the wrong things sometimes and I keep trying to be a good leader and I am still learning.” That sense of fun and curiosity spirit is certainly evident in this doco which showcases how this rainbow haired singer with punk rock attitude and a grab-bag of energetic tunes became one of the most iconic figures of the 1980s, revolutionising what a female popstar was expected to look and sound like.
Cast: Cindi Lauper, Boy George, Billy Porter, Patti LaBelle | Duration: 1 hour 38 minutes
How Music Got Free
In the words of Eminem, “Guess who’s back again? Shady’s back, tell a friend.” The rapper is back on the charts with Houdini and back on screen as the producer of How Music Got Free, a documentary detailing the inside story of the technology driven disruption that changed music. Narrated by Method Man and featuring interviews with Eminem, 50 Cent and Timbaland, the two-part series sheds light on a period during the late 1990s and early 2000s when the demand for new music coupled with file sharing technology turned fans into pirates. It’s an unbelievable story of cunning and celebrity as told by some of those at the heart of it.
Cast: Eminem, 50 Cent, Timbaland, Method Man | Duration: 1 season

Pretty in Pink
A much-hyped new documentary chronicling the impact of the 1980s actors dubbed “the Brat Pack” - debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival, its reigning queen, Molly Ringwald, was a notable absentee from both the movie and the red carpet. The film’s director (and fellow Brat Packer) Andrew McArthy explained: “The Brat Pack is an ongoing relationship…. And some people are at different places in their lives to want to or not want to talk about it.” That being said, McCarthy bares Ringwald no ill will and credits the flame-haired star with scoring him his big break as her love interest in Pretty in Pink, encouraging director John Hughes to cast him as the rich kid Blane rather than the more cliched “square jawed, hunky quarterback” in this film about an aspiring designer who longs to fit in with the popular kids.
Cast: Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, John Cryer, James Spader | Duration: 93 minutes
Grease
And when it comes to cinematic ladies in pink there are few as beloved or as recognisable as Rizzo and co in Grease. This 1978 musical made Olivia Newton John into a huge international star as the squeaky-clean Sandy Olsson to John Travolta’s leather-wearing, bad boy Danny Zuko. While the music will never go out of style, some of the overarching themes feel dated, to say the least. But if you ignore the overt sexism, bullying and promotion of smoking being cool, it is still a fun watch that will have the whole family singing.
Cast: Olivia Newton John, John Travolta, Stockard Channing | Duration: 1 hour 50 minutes

South Park The End of Obesity
Much like The Simpsons, the animated characters of South Park have won legions of fans skewering famous folk and pop culture with glee. In this latest film outing, South Park: The End of Obesity, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone (who notoriously dropped acid and turned up to the 2000 Oscars wearing the iconic frocks once donned by Gwyneth Paltrow and J Lo) take aim at Ozempic use. The weight loss wonder drug has been whittling down the frames of the rich and famous in recent years. But for Cartman, the franchise’s most popular (and morbidly obese) character the slimming solution is not so simple due to its hefty price-tag, leaving him to quip “Rich people get Ozempic, poor people get body positivity.”
Cast: Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Kimberly Brooks | Duration: 50 minutes
The Secret Life of Pets
In the now bountiful array of cute cartoons about cuddly creatures, The Secret Life of Pets is definitely one of the better offerings thanks to some hilarious sight gags, a slapstick storyline that kids will love and great voice cast that includes Louis CK (who was replaced for the sequel after allegations about sexual misconduct surfaced), Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart. It follows a bunch of New York house pets from the same apartment building who go on adventure led by a tiny and territorial terrier, his giant newly adopted fur brother and a maniacal bunny with delusions of being a criminal mastermind.
Cast: Kevin Hart, Eric Stonestreet, Chris Renaud, Jenny Slate | Duration: 1 hour 26 minutes

Marry Me
It’s no secret that Jennifer Lopez is one at the best in the business at saying ‘I do’ (on screen and off). The serial bride –whose headline grabbing marriage to fourth husband Ben Affleck is reportedly on the skids – once again fronts a film that’s about getting hitched in Marry Me. In a case of art imitating life, in Marry Me Lopez plays Kat Valdez, a megastar whose tumultuous love life is tabloid fodder. When Kat learns her latest fiancé has been cheating she decides to instead marry a complete stranger (Owen Wilson) who is in the audience of her televised wedding. Lopez told Rolling Stone that there was a lot about Kat that only someone like her could understand and she would remind herself: “What does it feel like when it all falls apart and you go home and you’re on the TV and they’re making fun of you as if it’s not painful? How does that feel? You know what? You’ve cried in a puddle on the floor too. That’s what it feels like. Or going underwater at that point where you feel like you’re drowning, suffocating in your own decisions that you know are not the right ones.”

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning
The seventh (and latest) addition to this action-packed espionage series is one of the most expensive films ever made. Tom Cruise was 34 when he first appeared in the role of field agent Ethan Hunt in the 1996 movie co-starring Jon Voight.
Now in his 60s (and with six more Mission: Impossible films under his belt) Cruise shows no sign of slowing down any time soon; literally throwing himself into the physically demanding role with same gusto he displayed when he memorably dangled from wires to pull off his first mission. Bourne series
This spy thriller is the antithesis of James Bond but will guarantee to have you shaken and stirred. Far from being a suave and calm-under-pressure agent, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is a former CIA agent with amnesia who’s trying to piece together his past while battling bad guys and saving the world. With the exception of the fourth movie, The Bourne Legacy which revolves around a secondary character played by Jeremy Renner (The Avengers’ Hawkeye) rather than Bourne himself, the movies (all available on Paramount+) each feature Damon and are directed by Paul Greengrass.
Cast: Matt Damon, Jeremy Renner | Duration: 4 movies

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story
In the 1980s the moustached Al Yankovic – armed with a piano accordion and a penchant for parody - became a huge star thanks to chart-topping spoofs such as “Eat It” and “Like a Surgeon”. In keeping with Yankovic’s style, his biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is also a joke, satirising popular musical biopics. It stars Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe as Yankovic and Rachel Evans Wood as a sassy young Madonna. And there are also plenty of celebrities cameos as other celebrities. Look out for Quinta Brunson as Oprah Winfrey, Jack Black as Wolfman Jack and – best of all – Conan O’Brien as Andy Warhol.
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Rachel Evans Wood | Duration: 1 hour 47 minutes
Mafia Mamma
Move over Marlon Brando because Murial’s Wedding’s Toni Collette, is making her mark as a new age Godmother. In Mafia Mamma, Collette is an under-appreciated suburban housewife who finds power and renewed passion when she inherits her grandfather’s estate (and role as the head of an Italian crime syndicate). It’s an enjoyable film that pokes fun at the underworld film genre.
Cast: Toni Collette | Duration: 1 hour 41 minutes
Mean Girls
The recent musical reboot of this 2004 teen drama proved a pale imitation but likewise served as a reminder to revisit the original clique of North Shore High School. There we find Cady (Lindsay Lohan) attempting to navigate a schoolyard where beautiful bully Regina George (Rachel McAdams) and her minions rule supreme. Written by Tina Fey, the film blends razor-sharp dialogue and classic romance into a package that viewers young and old will enjoy.
Cast: Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams | Duration: 1 hour 37 minutes
Instant Family
When it comes to bad parenting on screen there are few better than Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne. Wahlberg was the bad boy biological father who vies for the attention of his children with their new stepfather in Daddy’s Home while Byrne was a vengeful new mum locked in a war with a frat house in Neighbours and its sequel Bad Neighbours. Now the pair team up to provide double trouble in Instant Family. They play Peter and Ellie Wagner, a couple who decide to adopt a child for all the wrong reasons. Unfortunately for them, instead of bringing home a bundle of joy they envisaged, the couple find themselves wrangling a moody teen and her two precocious siblings.
Cast: Rose Byrne, Mark Wahlberg | Duration: 1 hour 58 minutes
Little Fockers
Believe it or not, Little Fockers (the third and final chapter in the Meet the Parents trilogy) marks the 12th time that Ben Stiller and his close mate Owen Wilson have starred together. In it, Stiller once again plays the hapless Greg Focker, while Wilson reprises his role as his smarmy love rival. The pair are engaged in a battle for the affections of Focker’s wife Pam and her domineering father Jack (Robert De Niro). Aso making cameos are Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman as Greg’s devoted parents. While de Niro’s performance as the gruff, interfering Jack is one of the most memorably hilarious screen father figures in recent memory, the actor’s real life fatherhood story got people talking when he welcomed his seventh child at age 79 in 2023!

Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves
Hugh Grant was initially hesitant to star in a film based on a nerdy board game until the script won him over with its riotous blend of humour and adventure. Back to the Future
It’s hard to imagine anyone but Michael J Fox behind the wheel of the time-travelling DeLorean. But believe it or not, Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly until the studio realised he was not right for the part and hired Fox. The Family Ties star shines as the upstart teen who, with the help of his madcap inventor pal Doc (Christopher Lloyd) travels from 1985 back to 1955 where he befriends his then teenage parents, inadvertently changing his own future in the process. Sequels Back to the Future II, set in 30 years in the future, Back to the Future III set in the wild west, followed and while we now know there are no flying cars in 2024 let alone 2015, it’s still a fun watch.
