Tried and tested by Sophie Miura, eCommerce General Manager

Consider this the Rolls Royce of baby monitors with a fleet of new AI–powered health and safety capabilities. I have been using this monitor every day for four months since the arrival of my son and have found that while some features may not be considered ‘essential’, they absolutely deliver priceless peace of mind.

The playback feature has been the most helpful as a first-time parent, as it allows you to view monitor footage for up to three days (previously 18 hours in older models). My husband and I use this to track wake windows (we can pinpoint the moment he rouses, even in those hazy wee hours of the morning) and scrutinise baby’s cues. While I initially thought this was a ‘nice to have feature,’ I can’t imagine using a monitor without it.

Released in January 2025, Cubo Ai Smart Baby Monitor 3 also has an industry-first growth tracking feature which measures baby’s height without any additional accessories. The monitor has a 2.5k QHD camera which connects to the Cubo app and the AI detection is six times faster than previous versions, so I know immediately if my son’s face is obscured or he rolled during a nap, via instant phone alerts.

Although the monitor is one of the priciest on the market, I found that the in-built night light, stand and white noise and lullaby feature meant I didn’t have to buy other gadgets (or worry about having to charge them). When you add to that the host of premium health and safety features, I consider it money well spent.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BABY MONITOR

We took the following aspects into consideration when choosing the products for this list:

FEATURES: Baby monitors offer a range of features, some more necessary than others. It all comes down to what you want from the device. Do you just simply need a monitor to hear or watch your baby while you're in the next room? Or do you want to monitor details like changes in heartbeat or room temperature? Basic features you might want to consider include two way audio, night vision, picture quality, battery life and signal strength.

SOUND: Look for a monitor with clear sound so you can hear your baby crying. You also might want to consider other sound features such as lullabies and soothing noises to calm baby down.

POWER: Monitors have different power sources, some use a rechargeable battery, others need a Wi-Fi connection. Make sure you know exactly how the monitor works before purchasing.

BUDGET: Baby monitors range from well under $100 up to $500, and the most expensive is not necessarily the most suitable. Work out how much you are prepared to spend and what features you really need and you will be able to find something to suit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO I REALLY NEED A BABY MONITOR?

The answer is not really -  but also definitely, yes. It really depends on how you feel. Many parents don't think they need one, but when their baby arrives, they find themselves rushing out to buy one (that was us).  As a new parent, it can be reassuring to have a monitor to keep an eye on your baby at all times, even though you're probably never far from their side. And certainly a monitor comes in handy as your baby gets bigger and is perhaps sleeping in another space, maybe upstairs or on the other side of the house.

DO I NEED TO SPEND A LOT ON A BABY MONITOR

Baby monitors range in price depending on features and technology. However you don't need to spend a fortune. You can buy very simple baby monitors that allow you to see and hear your baby, even talk to your baby to soothe them if needed. Of course you can spend hundreds of dollars and get all the bells and whistles, but if that doesn't fit your budget, you can still find a monitor that will do the trick.
