WHY IS IT CALLED VALENTINE’S DAY?

Today it’s known as the day couples shower one another with gifts, cards, roses and pledges of love but Valentine’s Day hasn’t always held such happy connotations. It’s said that Valentine’s Day is named after St Valentine, priest or monk who lived in Rome in the third century. St Valentine is said to have rebelled against the orders of Emperor Claudius II who had banned soldiers from getting married, helping them to wed in secret. Once his actions were uncovered, he was jailed and sentenced to death, falling in love with a jailer’s daughter in the process. Before he was executed, he is said to have gifted her a love letter, “from your Valentine”.

WHEN IS VALENTINE’S DAY?

Valentine’s Day is always celebrated on February 14 and this year, it conveniently falls on a weekend day – Sunday - so it’s time to plan something special.

If you’re looking for more Valentine’s Day gift inspiration, be sure to check out our huge round up of great presents here.
