The humble blender might be the ultimate jack-of-all-trades appliance, at least according to our resident Food Expert Kim Coverdale.
“Blenders are one of the great all-rounder appliances. They can crush ice and blitz cocktails and smoothies, blend pesto and curry pastes, whiz sauces, dressings and mayos and can easily whip up a pancake batter for your Sunday breakfast,” she says.
Looking for a deal? Vitamix's E310 is currently $200 off and perfect for "no more tedious batch blending" and "wrestling with sharp blades". The NutriBullet 900 Mega Pack is also just $89 (down from $119.95) and a great budget buy for making nut butter, ground coffee, pesto and more.

BEST BLENDER OVERALL
KitchenAid K400 Variable Speed Blender, $466.65 (down from $549) at Myer
What You Need To Know
For a go-to blender, Kim says KitchenAid’s K400 Blender is a winner. “For a reliable, easy-to-use blender you can’t go past the KitchenAid K400 blender. It’s got a large jug, 1200W motor and a five-speed dial. It also comes in a variety of classic KitchenAid colours,” Kim said.
The KitchenAid blender is designed to provide serious power thanks to its 1.7L ribbed jar that folds the ingredients onto the blades to create a blending vortex. This blender also contains an asymmetric blade with four different angles to direct food towards the blade. It even has a an adaptive motor, which means it maintains what it considers the optimal speed based on the contents the appliance detects inside the jar.
BEST PERSONAL BLENDERS
NutriBullet 900 Mega Pack, $89 (down from $119.95) at Myer
What You Need To Know
Short on bench space? NutriBullet offers some of the most popular personal blenders on the market, and the NutriBullet 900 Mega Pack is a great example why. It’s compact, contains a decent 900W high torque motor base, and is fairly affordable compared to other models on the market. You can also expect several attachments, including a extractor blade, milling blade, two tall cups, one short cup, two lip rings, a vessel grip and a flip top lid.
"Do yourself a favour and add this appliance to your kitchen. It's not just for smoothies or drinks — you can make breadcrumbs, flour, peanut butter, grind coffee beans, chop herbs (and) make pesto. Seriously, this machine is so versatile... I love this so so much," raved a customer on The Good Guys website.
“Love Nutribullet Bought this one to replace my old one that lasted about five years (the blades dulled). It’s sleek, small, but powerful. Love how it can effortlessly blend frozen fruits and ice,” a happy shopper wrote on the Myer website.
“Also a big fan of using as few dishes as possible, so it’s awesome that I can blend in the cup and don’t have to clean out a bulky blender.”
BEST BLENDERS FOR FOOD
Vitamix E310 Explorian Blender, $499 (down from $699) at Myer
Tried and Tested by Lauren Chaplin, Consumer Technology Writer
I’ve been on the lookout for a blender that can effortlessly handle both hot and cold foods, and the Vitamix E310 has been a game-changer. Its generous size means I can whip up everything from smoothies to soups in one go — no more tedious batch blending like with my old models. With ten different speed settings, the Vitamix blender also has enough power to quickly grind down tough ingredients, tackling things like nuts and ice with ease.
One of my favourite features though is its self-cleaning function. Just fill it with water and a drop of dish soap, turn it on, and it cleans itself — no more wrestling with sharp blades to take the whole thing apart.
The only downside is that it doesn’t have a proper lock-in mechanism on the base. While I’ve never had anything spill or go flying, I do wish it felt just a bit more secure. But, that’s a minor gripe considering how well it performs overall. It’s definitely worth the splurge.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A BLENDER
To find the best blender for your kitchen, we evaluated our Food Expert Kim Coverdale's top features to look for when shopping. We also paid particular attention to:
- Motor: A stronger motor will be able to better handle heavier, thicker mixtures and tough ingredients like nuts, ice, frozen fruit and seeds.
- Size: Personal blenders are great if you want a easy to store option or only plan on making lighter mixtures, such as single serve smoothies. These are also often more portable since they blend everything in the smoothie cup, rather than a blender jar. Full-size blenders take up more storage space but offer the heavy duty power you need for handling a wider variety of ingredients and textures.
- Can it crush ice: A blender must be powerful enough to handle hard ingredients, otherwise it can leave you with unblended ice cubes and potentially damage the blades (or at least wear them out much faster).
Are glass or plastic blender jugs better?
“If you’re looking for a lightweight, easy to clean jug, then look no further than a blender with a plastic jug. However, do keep in mind that some plastics are prone to staining, scratching and sometimes splitting, as well as having lingering odours from what you have blended previously (probably not the best for curry pastes),” she said.
“Most plastic jugs are BPA free and high-end blenders that have plastic jugs are often made from heavy-duty materials that are stain-resistant and built to remain odour free.
“Glass jugs are a lot heavier and can chip around the edges, but they do tend to last longer than plastic.”
What size motor do you need in a blender?
Adding frozen fruit and veggies to a smoothie is a great way to get closer to your recommended daily servings, with frozen options sometimes cheaper than fresh produce. Freezing is also a great way to avoid food waste. But this means opting for a blender with a higher wattage, or choosing a unit designed to crush ice.
“This is the real test for an amazing blender. Some will come with their own ice crushing setting, but if not, choose a blender with maximum wattage,” Kim says.
“A powerful motor will also help with crushing nuts to a paste (perfect for homemade peanut butter) or creating a delicious cheats sorbet. You are looking for a powerful force that will pull and then push the ingredients away from the base of the blender to ensure that your mixture is well combined with no large chunks left throughout the mixture.”
Easy to clean
“Depending on what you’ve prepared, some blenders can be a little difficult to access and clean around the blades. Check to see if you can easily pop the jug into the dishwasher without having to pull it apart – or better yet, find yourself a blender that has its own self-clean setting,” Kim said.
Different speed settings and pulse
“While some blenders have a simple on/off or three speed setting option, I find blenders with a speed dial or ‘slow start’ setting much more beneficial. Having the option to gradually increase your speed when blending doesn’t just give you control over what you’re blending but is also a great safety tool. You don’t want to be blending a hot soup in a blender that starts off way too fast and can result in burns,” she added.
“Having the added option of a pulse button is perfect for those quick to blend ingredients that you only want to chop, not puree.”
Capacity and size
“If you’re only interested in blitzing smoothies and shakes, then there’s some great little blenders on the market that come with their own cups that you can attach straight onto the blender. If size matters, look for a blender jug of around 1.5L to 2L capacity,” she suggested.
For those short on space, personal blenders are more compact than full-size blenders. They're also usually cheaper and portable.
Non-slip sturdy base
Want to cook hands-free? An underrated feature to look out for is rubber footing, especially if you want to prep other ingredients while the blender is running.
“Blenders are known to move a little when in use, so check the base of the blender to see if it has rubber footings to keep it secure to the bench. A solid motor base will also help to keep the blender stable especially when using a more powerful setting,” Kim explained.
Lid seal
This is where reading online reviews or playing with the product in-store can come in handy. Finding a blender with a strong seal is really important to prevent any leakages, so make sure to check how tightly the lid fits onto the blender jug.
Keep in mind that some brands, such as NutriBullet, don’t offer replacements.
