The air fryer has had the ‘glow up of the century’, evolving from a humble one-setting wonder to a culinary beast that can double park multiple dishes with different cooking methods in one go.

Legendary chef and restaurateur Marco Pierre White joined forces with Ninja Kitchen and British retailer Currys to create an exclusive white edition of the Ninja Double Stack XL, dubbing it the “Ferrari of kitchen appliances”.

Of course, we had to test them out for ourselves to see what the fuss is all about. And spoiler – they were amazing.

The Ninja DoubleStack XXXL was a winner for our Partnerships Manager Madison, who called the gadget “the ultimate hack for meal prep girlies like me” after making five dishes in just 30 minutes.

But our overall favourite has got to be the Ninja XXXL FlexDrawer Air Fryer. You can cook two smaller meals at once or combine both drawers to make the ultimate feast. Plus the easy interface is a great addition and it cooked pork, frozen chips and cake to perfection.

Read on to see all the best dual basket air fryers on the market to up the ante in your kitchen.

Ninja is one of the best brands out there when it comes to kitchen appliances and their XXXL FlexDrawer ticks all the boxes and is a hard one to beat.

It offers plenty of space and is so convenient and versatile. Whether you’re using the smaller individual baskets or combine both zones to make one large basket.

The unit cooks evenly and meals turn out exactly how they need to be – crispy on the outside and juicy inside, or perfectly fluffy if we’re talking cakes.

The standout feature though is the Smart Finish setting. I placed chicken nuggets on one side and frozen chips on the other, and programmed different settings for both baskets. Doing this saved me having to wait for one batch to finish before cooking the other.

How well it cooked a cake was highly impressive. I did use a boxed cake mix but it left it so moist and fluffy. I just poured the batter in one basket and turned it over towards the end to bake the bottom. Cooked roast pork was also a success – crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

The control panel is super simple to use and easy to read. And if you haven’t any trouble pressing buttons on a touch display, the dial is a better alternative. There’s also haptic feedback for the time and temperature buttons, which is a fun touch.

I am through and through a diehard meal prep girly, I have my ‘reset’ routine on a Sunday where I do all my food shopping and meal prep.

In terms of saving time, you’ve obviously guessed I am absolutely obsessed with my air fryer. It has always been my dream to be able to meal prep all my work lunches in one go with minimal effort, and now my dreams have come true. I have found my saviour. When I was presented the opportunity to try out the Ninja DoubleStack XXXL 9.5L 2-Drawer Air Fryer I couldn’t resist.

Tried & tested: Ninja DoubleStack XXXL Air Fryer

At first, I thought it would be too big for my bench since it was double stacked. But I was able to cook double the food in nearly half the space and still fits under standard size cabinets. Cooking four different types of food at once is literally the ultimate hack for meal prep girlies like me.

I can’t believe I was able to meal prep five meals within 30 minutes. The stackable racks in the Ninja air fryer even allowed me to cook half a kilo of chicken and a 500kg pumpkin in one go. I placed the chicken on the racks of both drawers and I put the pumpkin underneath. I also tried cooking the chicken and potatoes recipe from the included recipe book.

However, there are a few things I think could be improved. Even though cooking in bulk is easy, I felt the stackable design made it harder to take out, shake and turn the food mid-cooking. There also isn’t a prompt to turn your food halfway, which I have had with other air fryers. So, if you’re someone who relies on the ‘beep’, I recommend monitoring the time.

The major downside was seeing a considerable amount of condensation, despite placing the air fryer away from the cupboard to allow ample room for ventilation. This could be an issue if you have other appliances sitting on your bench.

Overall, if you’re looking for a kitchen appliance to make your life easier and you love to bulk prep, the Ninja DoubleStack XXXL 9.5L 2 Drawer Air Fryer is for you. However, it may require you to keep more of an eye on it compared to some other models.

With a trip to the supermarket now pretty much a luxury experience these days, I’m thrilled at how well this air fryer and steamer combo has whipped everything up. Frozen dumplings tasted surprisingly fresh and ultra juicy, brownies came out perfectly fluffy and gooey in no time, and it definitely passed the crispy yet tender pork belly test.

This new Philips unit also made steaming vegetables – correctly – really simple. I didn’t have to faff around with another appliance or extra pot, and the halfway beep helped keep the nice crunch and avoid overcooking.

Sometimes one basket in a dual air fryer can still be quite bulky, so it was also fantastic to have one slim compartment for when you only need to cook a small portion.

And while air fryers are usually easy to clean, these baskets were particularly breezy and didn’t require much elbow grease at all. They’re not that heavy, either.

The major downside was the lack of instructions. The control panel is loaded with wonderfully convenient one-touch programs but it’s not always clear on what each icon does and it’s not so user intuitive that you can figure everything out without a guide.

My number one tip is to download the user manual from the website, rather than sticking to the booklet. The PDF provides a more detailed breakdown on what each button does and lists different time and temperature recommendations for a variety of dishes (based on the number of pieces).

Plus, there are a few safety points to keep in mind, including not using other powerful appliances like kettles or grills on the same circuit at the same time.

Overall, I’m a fan. I love dishes like Hainan chicken, steamed brisket and veggies, and steamed dumplings, so the steam function made it a more useful all-in-one appliance compared to other air fryers.

How we choose our products

With hundreds of models available, it’s impossible to test every air fryer out there. To help you find the best dual air fryer, we tested several well-known brands at different price points.

In addition, our shopping team read hundreds of customer reviews and looked at test results and ratings to find the best dual air fryer from premium to budget to help you find the right one for your kitchen.

What to look for when buying an air fryer

Picking the right dual zone air fryer isn’t easy, but here are a few important factors we considered when deciding what to include in our roundup.

Size and capacity: Here’s how Appliances Online breaks down which capacity is worth getting, based on household size.

  • 0.5-2L: Ideal for single person households or small kitchen spaces or families.
  • 2-4L: Ideal for couples or small families, or if you have limited bench space.
  • 5L and above: Ideal for families or households wanting to make larger portions.

Easy to use controls: There are so many air fryers to choose from, including models with picture icons instead of written-out setting names, and units with both manual dials and touch controls. It’s also a good idea to read reviews to double check if buttons are easy to press, programs are easy to read, and if dividers come out smoothly or if they need a bit of force.

Cooking modes: Basic air fryers will have a simple cooking function, but more advanced models (like dual air fryers) are often programmed with settings and presets to cook different recipes and using different cooking methods, like baking, roasting, toasting and reheating.

Cooking temperatures: The temperature range of your air fryer will vary depending on its cooking settings and preset functions. Most will have a range of around 80°C to 210°C, though some can go lower for reheating or dehydrating.

Cooking time: Most air fryers with preset functions will come programmed with timers, but to perfect your recipe, you’ll need one with a manual timer.

Ease of cleaning: Most air fryers are made with non-stick pans and dishwasher safe accessories (including baskets) for a simple clean up.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS IT WORTH GETTING A DUAL AIR FRYER?

Dual basket air fryers are perfect for anyone who wants to maximise everything this benchtop appliance has to offer. You can make larger portions and whip up multiple dishes at the same time using different cooking methods.

And it doesn’t always have to be grand – they’re just as convenient for doing smaller tasks, such as ‘frying’ a batch of hot chips or reheating a pastry, but require much less energy and clean-up.

Depending on your kitchen space and the air fryer model, a dual zone unit doesn’t take up that much more space than a multicooker or toaster oven – two gadgets which can easily be replaced by one multifunctional air fryer.

WHAT TYPE OF AIR FRYER IS BEST?

This will all depend on your cooking needs and kitchen size, but there are some difference to help you choose which type will be best for you.

Single drawer air fryers

A single drawer air fryer is your classic, basic model air fryer with one pullout basket. They are smaller, compact and great for singles or couples or those with a limited amount of kitchen space, with a capacity of around 3L to 6L.

They are faster, easier and usually cheaper than other air fryer models available. However, they can only cook small amounts at a time, or you’ll need to cook several batches for multiple servings. They are best for cooking oven fries, chicken wings, chicken nuggets and leftovers.

Double drawer air fryers

As the name suggests, a double drawer air fryer comes with two separate cooking zones to double the cooking space and cooking performance of an original air fryer. They’ll usually come with independent air fryer functions and controls so you can make two separate meals at once with different temperatures and settings.

These are great appliances for families cooking larger portions, those who hold small dinner parties and want to get the entree and main ready at once, or those who want to make a side dish to go with their meal, like cooking chicken in one drawer and fries in the other.

The downside is they tend to be more expensive than single drawer air fryers and a lot bulkier, so they aren’t great options for those with smaller kitchens.

Oven style air fryers

An oven style air fryer looks similar to a classic toaster oven, but with the same general design as your convection oven. They have multiple racks to air fry your ingredients and are often quite big so you can feed everyone in the family.

They typically have several functions on top of air frying, such as baking, roasting, toasting and dehydrating. They can be trickier to clean (like your ordinary oven) and often take longer to heat.

Multicooker air fryers

Many air fryers on the market come with multicooker functionality, often combining a pressure cooker, slow cooker and air fryer in the one appliance. This allows you to cook a wide range of meals without needing to splurge on other appliances.

They can be big, bulky and heavy, so they’ll like take permanent residence on the kitchen counter. And the air fryer functionality often takes second fiddle to the other functions and cooking settings, with typically smaller fryer baskets included.

HOW BIG SHOULD MY AIR FRYER BE?

Again, this will come down to your kitchen space, how many people you’re cooking for and how often you’ll likely use it.

If cooking in a single or two-person household, a small 3L or 4L air fryer should be sufficient. It’ll take up less space on the counter but be big enough to whip up a decent portion of fries or some chicken pieces.

A small family should go for a 4.5L to 6L size to make sure everyone is fed whereas those in a big family and with many hungry tummies to feed should opt for something larger like an 8L air fryer.

If you love to host a family gathering or are keen on meal prepping and batch cooking for the week ahead, an air fryer above an 8L capacity should do the trick, but always make sure your kitchen is big enough to fit this large appliance.

HOW DOES AN AIR FRYER WORK?

An air fryer is considered a healthier alternative to getting juicy and crispy meals without using a deep fryer. Inside the appliance are coils that heat up similar to those in a convection oven. A fan then circulates the hot air it produces around the fryer to heat up your food from all angles and give it that crispy coating we all love.

ARE AIR FRYERS A HEALTHIER COOKING METHOD?

Air fryers make healthy cooking easier, especially with more brands adding functions like ‘steam’ and ‘dehydrate’. They’re also famously designed to use little to no oil, which is great for those wanting to reduce their grease intake.

WHAT IS THE BEST BRAND OF AIR FRYERS?

Most kitchen appliance brands on the market will have their own version of air fryer to buy, so it’s hard to determine which one is best without trying them all out.

Based on our tests, we loved the Ninja air fryer range thanks to their versatility, easy to use controls and delicious results. On top of the two dual zone air fryers we tested, they make a wide range of other air fryers, including the ever popular Ninja Foodi Max, the advanced Ninja Air Fryer Pro and the multipurpose Ninja Foodi Smart XL Grill & Air Fryer.

We also enjoyed the Philips 5000 Series Dual Air Fryer, which is one of the more advanced models in the Philips range. They also make smaller, single drawer air fryers and some high tech options.

Other well known and fan-favourite brands you can try include Tefal, Instant Pot, Breville and Sunbeam.

CAN AN AIR FRYER REPLACE MY OVEN?

Generally speaking, yes it can!

Air fryers are versatile appliances that can save on cooking time and space, and have different settings to suit a variety of meals and recipes.

They’re also typically more energy efficient, saving you money on your power bill, which is a welcome bonus in a cost of living crisis.

Obviously, you can’t simply whip out your oven and slot an air fryer in, but if you cook smaller portions and have enough counter space, you can definitely use an air fryer in place of your oven for many of your meals.
