WHAT DO YOU PUT IN A LINEN CUPBOARD?

The term ‘linen cupboard or closet’ can be throw around quite loosely. No, it doesn’t mean you just have to stick to it being a storage space for your bed linen.

In fact, a linen cupboard can be the perfect spot to store your home’s essentials items that need to be folded for easy access.

Here’s some of the items you can include in your linen cupboard:

  • Bed linen
  • Extra bedding, such as pillows as quilts
  • Bath towels, hand towels, face washers
  • Spare guest bedding and linen
  • Spare throw rugs

HOW DO YOU ORGANISE A LINEN CUPBOARD?

Is there a proper way to organise a linen cupboard? Do the sheets need to sit above the towels? Not really, but there are a few tips you can follow to organise your linen cupboard – and make sure it stays that way!

First things first, you’re going to want to declutter. Throwback to when Marie Kondo took over our lives, decluttering your space of things you no longer use is always going to help. We don’t blame you if you find a 10-year old sheet set in your linen closet. It’s easy to forget that those things exist, so cull the cupboard of things you no longer need and reach for. Next, you’re going to want to think about what kind of items you find yourself frequently grabbing for (and which ones you don’t).

Keep any spare items for guests at the top and bottom of the cupboard, and arrange more common items like bed linen and towels somewhere in the middle. Reserve bulky items like spare pillows and thick blankets for the very top shelf.

We also recommend grouping similar items together – so keep the sheet sets, the pillowcases and the bath towels in an easy-to-find stack and you’ll never lose your favourite silk pillowcase again.

WHAT CAN I PUT IN MY LINEN CUPBOARD TO KEEP IT SMELLING FRESH?

How good is the smell of freshly washed linen? Unfortunately, the scent doesn’t last forever. But you can use a few tricks to fake the smell, even when your linen has been sitting in the cupboard for a few months.

  1. Don’t overcrowd your linen cupboard – It might sound a little funny, but linen does in fact need room to breathe. If it’s not getting enough air circulation, it can get that dreaded musty smell, so try not to pack things too tightly.
  2. Linen needs to be dry – Once you wash a sheet set or a bath towel, make sure it’s completely dry before putting it away. Again, this will help ensure you don’t get a musty smell.
  3. Use the power of scents – Now we don’t mean to spray your favourite perfume everywhere, but don’t be afraid to keep a diffuser or a box of soap alongside your linen. We recommend keeping the scent fresh and floral, rather than woody and sweet.
