Customers report being pleasantly surprised by the suction power, one reporting, “I have a two-year-old kid and you can imagine the amount of dirt gets into the car when we go out. It can be beach sand, snacks, paper litter etc., anything and everything. Using this vacuum cleaner, I was able to pull out all those dirt out of my car easily. We’ve just bought a new family car and are still in that early phase of trying to keep the interior as immaculate as humanly possible. This may be short lived with two teens, a dog and a husband who surfs, but we’re determined to give it a go. So, when I got the opportunity to test out the ThisWorx Car Vacuum, the timing could not have been more perfect. And while I wasn’t sure if this pint-sized vacuum cleaner was up for the job, I have to say it certainly delivers.

First up, the Worx Car Vacuum is lightweight and extremely user friendly. You simply plug it into the cigarette lighter socket in the car (which I didn’t realise I even had) and away you go. Most importantly, it has a surprisingly strong suction for such a small vacuum cleaner and had no trouble in picking up the debris, food crumbs, bits of grass, dirt, sand and anything else that had magically accumulated on our car floor.

While it’s not cordless, it has an extremely long cord that allows you to get right around the car’s interior with no problem at all. Plus, it comes with three handy attachments including a brush head for the fabric seats, a flat head to remove stubborn debris and an extension nozzle to reach those tricky nooks and crannies.

The dustbin capacity is plenty large enough - after a couple of thorough vacuums, it still wasn’t full. And to empty, you simply open the vacuum at the press of a button, take out the filter and tip the debris into the bin.

I also really love that the vacuum and accessories fit neatly and easily into a zip-up carry case so you can stow it away in the boot of the car or under a seat. It takes up no room at all, you won’t lose the attachments and it’s always on hand for those quick in-between clean-ups.

Overall, I have been extremely impressed with this car vacuum. It’s an absolute winner, and just what we need to keep our new car looking, well, new.

Dyson Car+Boat Handheld Vacuum, $299 (down from $449) at Dyson

Tried and Tested by Cindy Du news.com.au checkout eCommerce Producer

My car was in desperate need of a deep clean - it was full of dirt, leaves, rocks and all the usual chaos from my hiking adventures. So, I put the Dyson Car + Boat Vacuum to the test to see if it was worth the $449 investment.

Right out of the box, the vacuum looked sleek, felt sturdy and surprisingly lightweight.

The suction power was impressive thanks to its powerful motor and filtration system that easily picked up dust and dirt I didn’t know even existed.

Battery life was also a standout. Lasting up to 50 minutes on full charge, it was more than enough to clean all three cars in our household.

The vacuum also comes with three handy attachments: a crevice tool for those hard-to-reach corners, a combination tool which interchanges between a dusting and wide nozzle stick.

But my personal favourite was the mini motorised brush that has a spinning head that lifts stubborn dirt and crumbs from carpets.

The generously-sized dustbin was easy and intuitive to empty, you just have to hold the vacuum over a bin and press the button.

There are a couple of downsides to consider. You do have to keep the trigger button held down the entire time you are cleaning, which can be a little bit annoying. And like most car vacuums, it was a bit tricky to manoeuvre under the seats due to its size. Still, I found these to be minor inconveniences.

Overall, with its thoughtful design, strong battery life, powerful suction and filtration, I’d say it’s worth it as an investment if you’re looking for a reliable and heavy-duty handheld car vacuum.

SURDOCA Car Trunk Organiser, $29.99 at Amazon Australia

What You Need To Know

Most of us fall into one of two categories of car owners. Those with belongings strewn about our boot, with no sense of organisation; and those who have repurposed cardboard boxes as storage containers, slowly disintegrating as they come into contact with mud and water. Fitting 90 per cent of car models, this easily-installed, eight-pocket organiser will hold everything from groceries to camping equipment.

Durable, waterproof and discreet, this boot organiser currently sits on more than 5,500 five-star reviews on Amazon, with no sign of slowing down.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A CAR VACUUM

Not all vacuums are created equal. We looked at several factors when evaluating the best car vacuum to buy.

Suction power: Ideally, your car vacuum should have a minimum suction power rating of 8 kPA (20 AW) in order to clean surfaces effectively.

Battery: How long the battery lasts is a key consideration, particularly when searching for a portable device to use on the go.

Corded vs. Cordless: While corded models tend to be more powerful than their cordless counterparts, the trade-off is that they can be less portable.

Size: Are you looking for a small and compact car vacuum to take travelling or will you be doing most of your cleaning while your car is parked in your driveway?

Weight: While there’s no “perfect weight”, think about the practical use of your car vacuum when looking at weight. Will it be stored in your vehicle? You might want something lighter and easier to carry. If it’s going to be stored at home, a heavier weight is less of a deal breaker.

Accessories: Consider which accessories such as various sized nozzle attachments, brushes and filters will suit your specific cleaning requirements.

HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS

Our team of experienced writers spend hours researching products to include in articles. We find out what factors make a good product by talking to expert, reviewing test results and analysing thousands of customer reviews.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I VACUUM MY CAR?

The answer to this question depends, of course, on your lifestyle and occupants of your car. Car owners with little children; active lifestyles that track dirt through carpet; and commutes through dust or pollution-heavy areas, may choose to vacuum their car interiors fortnightly (if not more often). Regardless of lifestyle however, we recommend vacuuming your car’s interior at least once a month, to rid carpet and surfaces of latent dust and unseen bacteria that may be gathering, despite regular use of your vehicle or not.

HOW DO YOU PROPERLY VACUUM A CAR?

Though not an exact science, there are a few tips to ensure you clean your car thoroughly and efficiently.

We recommend:

  • Vacuum the floor last, so any residue from seats that fall to the floor are collected at once.
  • Consider a combination vacuum cleaner if you have pets – like the Bissell 472OP SpotClean Professional Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner – to ensure all allergens are thoroughly removed from upholstery and carpet.
  • Make use of any and all head attachments that have been designed for use in the car. Broad head attachments, while excellent for overall surfaces, often can’t get to the nooks and crannies behind foot pedals and between seats.
  • If your car has any lingering odours, consider laying down baking soda before vacuuming. Inexpensive and easy to use, this will make a marked improvement on your car’s interior.
