As someone who describes myself as perpetually cold, you’d think summer would be a welcome relief. Well, think again.

I despise summertime. The blaring sun, the inescapable heat – you can’t describe a worse hell. So after years of avoiding anything outside for months at a time, I decided enough was enough and found a way to keep myself cool and help me enjoy the weather: the JISULIFE Portable Neck Fan.

This genius device is what I’ve coined ‘the Goldilocks of personal cooling’. It has five fan settings so you’ll be able to find the perfect cooling power to suit the temperature and your activity. Need just a little chilled air? Opt for the first setting. But if you’re really breaking out a sweat, turn it on to level five.

It’s also got a modern design, a 360° cooling effect and comes in at a great price point. While it’s not something I’d considered using in the past, but I’ll definitely be wearing it all summer long.

What You Need To Know

Designed to provide a “refreshing experience” in warm weather and the summer heat, the JISULIFE Portable Neck Fan lives up to my expectations and gives off a nice cool breeze as I go about my day.

It looks just like a pair of high-tech headphones resting around your neck so it doesn’t look odd or out of place as part of your outfit. And it’s super light and very comfortable to wear. While there isn’t any padding, it wasn’t irritating or uncomfortable sitting on my collarbone and around my neck.

There are five speed settings to choose from. The first gives a gentle breeze around your neck and barely makes a sound. The fifth is incredibly powerful and rather loud. But my favourite was the third which was my Goldilocks – just the right amount of power to feel cooled down without being too loud.

I found the third setting was the best of all, giving me enough cool air without being too loud to get me through the entire day. Picture: Rosalyn Fannin / new.com.au checkout.

It’s all controlled via the power button, which is simple to use. However, I wish there were two separate buttons – one for power and another for speed settings.

The battery lasts for several hours. While the strongest setting only saw me through two hours, the lowest setting lasted for more than 12 hours. And its speedy charging takes around three to four hours to fully charge.

This is a summer must-have and something I’ll be wearing in any weather. From those relaxing beach days and humid evenings to the extreme heat out in the blaring sun, the JISULIFE Portable Neck Fan has me covered.

Design

Super slick-looking, I was initially worried that the JISULIFE Portable Neck Fan would be style over substance and put form over function, but I’m glad to report I was wrong.

Available in Grey, Pink, Blue, Black and Green, this fan looks almost identical to a sleek set of headphones. But instead of sitting on your head and ears, it hangs around your neck, and it never looked out of place while I was wearing it and going about my day.

The standout design feature is its 78 air outlets which blows wind at a 45° angle up and around your neck. These outlets are ‘half-closed’, which makes it dust and waterproof while still creating a powerful cooling effect. They are located across almost the entire fan to give you 360° cooling.

All the cool air will come out of these air vents, with a total of 78 built into the fan. Picture: Rosalyn Fannin / news.com.au checkout.

If you have long hair like me, you’re probably worried about your luscious locks getting caught in the blades. But fear not, as this neck fan has a brushless motor with no fan blades, so the risk is averted.

Power and speeds

You have the choice of five speed and power settings, which are controlled by the power button on the bottom left of the fan.

A single press of the button turns the fan on and sets it at the first speed. Pressing it again sets it to the second speed and so on. To turn it off, press the power button once when you are at fifth speed, or hold the power button down.

This is easy to operate and not too tricky to get the hang of, but it would likely be less fiddly if they were separate buttons, especially while you’re wearing it.

With regards to the fan’s power, each setting shows off its versatility.

The first setting is rather gentle and provides a light breeze. It’s best suited to when you are sitting and resting as the cooling is a bit too light when moving about.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the fifth setting is intense. It blows lots of cool air quickly up your neck, but it’s almost too much. I wear glasses and I felt the air was going under them and into my eyes.

But I found the sweet spot with the third setting. This is the Goldilocks setting of the fan. It blew enough cool air to keep me comfortable in the warm weather, but not so much to blow me away.

Battery life

The JISULIFE Portable Neck Fan is designed to last up to four hours on the strongest setting and up to 16 on the lowest setting. However, my tests were a little different.

Unfortunately, the strongest fifth power setting only lasted for just over two hours, which is a little disappointing.

I had better luck with the lowest setting. It kept powering for well over 12 hours before I had to turn it off for the night, so that gets big ticks from me. Finally, my favourite third setting lasted me just over five hours before needing a recharge.

Once it ran out of juice, it took around three to four hours to fully charge again.

Noise

The sound difference from the lowest and highest setting is worlds apart.

The brand boasts that the fan is “whisper quiet,” which is certainly the case for the first setting. You can barely hear a thing when you’re wearing it, even though it’s right by your ears. But as mentioned above, the cooling isn’t the most effective.

The highest fifth setting was very loud, which was pretty distracting. If you’re needing a good cool down but don’t want the noise of the fan ringing through your ears, you could get away with using this setting if you wear some headphones or earphones and listen to music.

But once again the champion was the third power setting. You could definitely still hear the fan operating, but it wasn’t annoying or stopping me from taking part in conversations.

Verdict

I don't think I'll go without this fan this summer. Picture: Rosalyn Fannin / news.com.au checkout.

As someone who feels the heat, the JISULIFE Portable Neck Fan is a real winner.

It offers a nice breeze to keep you cool in any situation. If you’re sitting down resting or relaxing, the first setting has you covered. If you’re moving about and breaking out a sweat, the fifth setting is the best option. And if you just want to stay cool while going about your day-to-day activities, I recommend the third setting.

There were a couple of downfalls like the shorter battery life and noise levels, but they are definitely overshadowed by its slick look, comfortable wear and, of course, how well it keeps you cool.

This is going to be a summer staple for me this year, and for many years to come. All I need now is to pack my towel and bathers, head to the beach and enjoy the sunshine.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO WEARABLE NECK FANS ACTUALLY WORK?

While it might seem a bit far-fetched, neck fans can definitely help cool you down in warm weather.

They are a hands free self cooling option that provide an effective and constant flow of cool air directed at your neck and face. Most neck fans offer different speed and power settings to best suit the weather and your cooling needs as well as create an extra level of comfort in hot weather.

The downside is that they can be rather loud. They are best used indoors rather than in direct sunlight, and will be less cooling when outside in the elements. But they do make for a good alternative if you don’t have access to airconditioning.

ARE NECK FANS BETTER THAN HANDHELD FANS?

Neck fans and handheld fans are two of the most popular portable cooling options. Both have pros and cons, which may make them more suitable to some more than others.

Here is what you need to know about both fans to help you pick the best one for you this summer:

Neck fans

Completely hands free, neck fans blow cool air around your face and neck while letting you go about your daily activities without sacrificing on the cooling effects.

They look strikingly similar to headphones, so they don’t look out of place when wearing them in public. They are often very lightweight and are usually rather inexpensive while still being an effective personal cooling option.

However, they can sound very noisy to the wearer – especially being that close to the ears. They are also built with fixed air vents, so you can’t change the direction of the air flow.

Handheld fans

There are many different options of handheld fans – each varying in shape and size to suit your needs. They are usually very compact, with many boasting a foldable design, making it easier to take along with you.

Using a handheld fan, you can pinpoint exactly where you want the cool air to blow. But as the name suggests, they are not hands free, which means you’ll constantly hold it to feel the cooling effects.

WHAT OTHER PORTABLE FANS WILL KEEP ME COOL THIS SUMMER?

Aside from neck fans, there are several other fan types that can keep you cool in the hot weather.

  • Handheld fans: Small fans that you hold and direct cool air to different areas of your body.
  • Portable coolers: Compact air conditioner-like USB-charged devices with water tanks to cool small spaces.
  • Misting fans: A handheld fan that lightly sprays water and blows air simultaneously.
  • Waist fans: A fan that clips to your pants or belt and blows cool air up your torso.

WHAT OTHER NECK FANS ARE AVAILABLE?
