HOW DOES A DEHUMIDIFIER WORK?
While humidifiers add moisture to the air, dehumidifiers work to get rid of the excess moisture to make for a drier, less musty home. It can also mean a reduced airconditioning bill, less air pollution and, in some cases, less severe allergies.
“The dehumidifier pulls in warm damp air from the environment, then using a fan the machine pushes the air over coils inside the machine. This turns the moisture into condensation which is captured within the machine and goes in the collection tank,” Adele said.
“Some dehumidifiers have the added benefit of a HEPA or equivalent filter so either when the air is pulled into the machine or when the dry air is pushed back into the environment, it is purified as well.”
WHAT FEATURES TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A DEHUMIDIFIER
While a dehumidifier can be a great investment, there are some factors you’ll want to consider before making a purchase.
Filters
Similar to air purifiers, certain dehumidifiers come with filters that trap airborne contaminants such as dust, smoke, pollen and pet dander. “A dehumidifier with an air filter can also be an advantage as these will help purify the air that is circulated back into the environment once the moisture is removed,” Adele said.
Size
Dehumidifiers come in a range of different sizes and capacities, making it relatively easy to find one to suit your needs. Generally speaking, dehumidifiers come in three sizes: large, medium and small, with capacities starting at around 500ml per day and ranging up to around 40L per day.
Larger capacity models are often quieter and more energy efficient, though tend to be bigger and heavier as well as more expensive. Smaller capacity models are more budget-friendly and more suitable for smaller areas such as bathrooms, but the trade off is that you’ll get less features, less efficiency and a smaller water tank.
Water tank
You’ll want to look for a dehumidifier with a capacity of 4L or more if you want to avoid emptying it frequently. As a bigger tank equals a bigger, heavier dehumidifier though, you’ll need to weigh up portability and the size of your space with the convenience of a larger tank size.
You can also look for models with a hose output, which will allow you to run a hose from the unit to a drain or a sink for continuous draining.
Humidistat
Adele recommends finding a dehumidifier that lets you set a particular humidity level or range, which allows the machine to automatically turn off and on depending on whether the relative humidity of the room is outside that particular range.
Auto-restart
If you want to keep your dehumidifier running with minimal effort, try looking for a model with an auto-restart function. After a power outage, these dehumidifiers will start themselves back up again so you don’t have to lift a finger.
WHEN SHOULD YOU USE A DEHUMIDIFIER?
Dehumidifiers aren’t designed to be used all day, every day. Instead, the National Asthma Council Australia Sensitive Choice program suggests using the machine whenever the indoor humidity level goes above 50 per cent.
You can check this by reading the hygrometer (a humidity metre) on the appliance, or by looking for a few telltale signs.
“Other signs of high humidity in the home include condensation on the windows in bedrooms and bathrooms in the morning, mildew, or mould in the backs of cupboards and wardrobes, odours particularly in bathrooms and laundries,” Adele listed.
“Where you live can also have an impact on humidity; generally Queensland and parts of the northern states have higher humidity in Australia due to their tropical environment.”
OTHER WAYS TO REDUCE HUMIDITY IN YOUR HOME
Adele recommends having good ventilation and air flow are two easy ways to control the humidity in your home. Other ways include:
• Make sure you have good ventilation in your home and good air flow.
• Using extractor fans in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries can help with natural ventilation to reduce the likelihood of mould or mildew growth.
• Sealing leaks in bathrooms and roofs.
• Drying or removing wet carpets.
• Treating rising damp as soon as it is detected.
• If there is any visible mould, remove it with fermented vinegar and remember mould is not always visible, so it is important to find and stop the source of the mould.
• If you are sensitive to strong odours, wear a mask or ask someone else to do it for you.
• Try to keep bedrooms dry and well ventilated by opening windows regularly and leaving wardrobe doors ajar.
