Getting the viral strawberry matcha latte for just under a $1? Yes, please.

While we can’t exactly get behind the resurgence of low rise jeans, Gen Z’s frugal love for making matcha combos like Yakult matcha or hazelnut matcha at home is one unexpected TikTok trend we can easily back.

Sure, iced lattes are great and all … but have you had a matcha? It gives you the same energy boost as coffee without the caffeine crash and jitters. It’s also packed with two antioxidants called catechins and polyphenol which have been linked to lowering blood pressure and certain types of cancer.

Although the green colour may look weird and perhaps be a bit divisive, in our humble opinion, it just tastes really good. And yes, it’s better than coffee.

NOTE TO READER: Matcha Made is currently offering 30 per cent off sitewide and if you spend over $70, you get a free whisk, tote and journal.

So, it’s no surprise our team was super excited to try out Matcha Made. The Aussie brand has made matcha lattes super quick and easy to make, particularly if you like it mixed with vanilla or cinnamon. It also uses a battery-operated whisk, rather than a traditional bamboo whisk, to speed things up and make it less tiring on your hands.

Matcha has been a staple in countries such as a Japan for centuries, thanks to many health benefits spanning from improved mental clarity and increased metabolism. It’s made by grinding green tea leaves into a fine powder, which is then turned into a delicious hot or cold frothy latte.

I absolutely love my matcha lattes, but at $7 each, it doesn’t always feel like it likes me back. Making matcha lattes at home was actually my New Year’s resolution for 2024, and after nearly 11 months into the year, I’m glad I can finally tick off that goal.

Matcha Made makes the process of making matcha a lot less intimidating and I was so surprised at how little time it took to whip up from the first go. It takes a couple of minutes to ’brew’ and costs just $0.90 per serve when you break things down. Plus, you can measure the matcha with your heart. The can, whisk and whisk stand are also compact enough to leave on your desk or take in your bag to work.

I like to add about two or three teaspoons (depending on the cup size) of the strawberry matcha latte blend to the strainer, about 1/4 cup of warm water, plus some oat milk and usually some ice. If I’m feeling fancy or looking for a hot drink, I’ll take out the frother.

The strawberry blend tastes a like a matcha and strawberry milk combo, and wasn’t too sweet at all. (And don’t worry, it doesn’t have that gross fake fruity taste some drinks have.) I didn’t add any sweeteners, but you can adjust the taste with honey or anything else you like.

I’ve been addicted to matcha for a good six years now, and with the sudden boost in popularity for strawberry matcha, I jumped at the opportunity to give this blend from Matcha Made a red-hot go.

Here’s how I make my perfect strawberry matcha using Matcha Made. I add two tablespoons of the powder into the sifter, let it go through and then add 1/4 cup of warm water. I then use the electric mixer for about 30 seconds to a minute to let the matcha get all nice and frothy. If I’m making an iced version, I’ll add a bunch of ice and then top it with my milk of choice. But if I’m feeling like something warm and cosy, I’ll top it with warm milk and enjoy.

I can’t believe how incredibly easy Matcha Made’s strawberry matcha is to make. While it doesn’t have real strawberries like you get in your local cafe, the powder is infused with a strawberry blend and it tastes so delicious – it’s subtle but not overpowering, giving the matcha the perfect amount of sweetness.

Nowadays a strawberry matcha will set you back about $8 in Sydney – crazy, I know. Considering the Matcha Made powder is $54 for about 60 servings, that works out to just under a dollar for each cup you make — what a bargain!!
