I’ll admit I’ve never been super into gadgets. I simply don’t see the appeal. And more often than not after a couple of weeks, they find their way to a cupboard never to be used again. Or so I thought before trying the Therabody Smart Goggles.

This heavenly massage mask recently accompanied me on a 24 hour flight to Europe and I honestly don’t know how I’ve ever travelled without them. Oh so relaxing, the Therabody Smart Goggles are a far cry from your average gimmick.

It’s fair to say I am thoroughly obsessed.

But first, let’s backtrack a bit.

WHAT IS THERABODY?

Therabody, previously known as Theragun prior to a rebrand in 2020, was originally founded by chiropractor Dr Jason Wersland and focused on percussive therapy massage guns. Since then, the brand has extended into wider wellbeing and now has a collection of fitness smart devices.

HOW DO THE THERABODY SMART GOGGLES WORK?

Powered by SmartSense Technology, the Therabody SmartGoggles are able to detect your heart rate and then customise treatments in order to lower it to a more relaxed state. It has three modalities: vibration, massage and heat. It also has three customisable modes: Focus, SmartRelax and Sleep. All three sessions last for 15 minutes.

While all three modes differ slightly, essentially they use a combination of heat, massage and vibrations to encourage total relaxation. But with all three modes, you can also adjust the heat and vibration settings to your liking. Plus, when using the app there are other modes available that last for longer or shorter time frames and use different aspects of the heat, massage and vibration settings.

The SmartGoggles also come with a soft case and fold over in the middle so that they’re easily portable. And with a 150 minute battery life, you can be sure they won’t run out of battery after only one use.

PROS

  • Three different settings are available
  • Links with the Therabody app
  • Automatically turns off after 15 minutes
  • Easy to use

CONS

  • They are a little bit noisy
  • The strap can be tight and I found it had to be in the perfect position in order to stay on my head
  • At $299, they’re not exactly affordable

THE VERDICT

Opening up the box my first thought was they looked very futuristic. I’ve only done a few VR experiences before but they definitely gave off that vibe. But once you’ve got over the sci-fi aesthetics, it’s clear to see these SmartGoggles are not messing around.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with Therabody SmartGoggles. My favourite mode is the Sleep function and I have been using them every night before sleep since I first started trialling the product. They have now become just another part of my nightly routine. I love how they make me feel utterly relaxed and ready for sleep. The massage on your temples is seriously life-changing.

Admittedly, I am one of the lucky few that doesn’t struggle when it comes to sleep. I fall asleep easily and most of the time sleep straight through until morning. So I can’t comment on whether it improved my sleep but I will say, I simply loved the way it made me feel.

Also while I did notice a small change between the three modes, it honestly wasn’t super distinguishable. The biggest difference would be the lack of heat in the Sleep mode.

The elastic strap is a little bit tight when you first pop the goggles on but after a few minutes, it is not noticeable. The temple massage also squeezes quite hard but I don’t find it uncomfortable. In fact, it is more relieving if anything.

I also took them on a 24-hour flight from Sydney to Paris. While any long-haul flight in economy is never going to be entirely comfortable, popping them on mid-flight did feel very luxurious. Flying always puts you a little bit on edge and these instantly calmed me down and helped me settle in. To be honest though, I only wore them on the way over when I had a window seat. They are fairly large on your face and I was just a tad too self-conscious to bring them out while sitting on the aisle seat.

Perhaps, the best part about the SmartGoggles is that it literally forces you to take a break. Once these are over your eyes, there is nothing you can do but sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. There’s no checking of work emails and no scrolling of socials, only 15 minutes of pure bliss.

Would I recommend Therabody SmartGoggles?

Ultimately, yes I would. They have easily become my favourite part of my night time routine. Finishing the day with a nightly temple massage is honestly a game changer. And possibly the best part is that they force me off my phone and have seriously reduced my screen time.

I understand that they are expensive but for me, they are totally worth it. Also, in comparison to other more expensive smart health devices like massage guns, the cost per use is incredibly low.

The SmartGoggles managed to seamlessly fit into my everyday routine and at the end of the day, they made me feel good which honestly isn’t that all we really want?
