I think we can all agree jeans shopping is the worst.
Not only do you have to mentally prepare for at least a week, you always work up a sweat tugging and pulling the denim up, only to discover that you’ve picked the most ill-fitting and unflattering jeans you’ve ever worn. The harsh changeroom lights and circus-like mirrors do zero to help the cause and more often than not, you leave the mission empty-handed.
So when we find a style and brand we love, we stick to it – and buy it in every single wash available.
That’s why when I noticed a pair of jeans flying off the proverbial racks, I knew I needed to investigate. They were so popular in fact, they made news.com.au checkout’s top 10 most bought items of 2023.
What are they I hear you screaming? No gatekeeping here: they are the Neuw Lola Mom Jeans.
I shouldn’t have been surprised. Now that skinnys are out, the mom jean is the easiest transition to make and the Neuw Lola style in particular features a high-rise, fitted waist and a slim, tapered leg that’s considered universally flattering for all. Plus, it comes in a wide array of denim shades.
The Lola Mom Jean is one of Neuw’s bestsellers and Emilie Sinclair, Neuw Denim Womenswear Designer, puts it down to the fact “mom jeans are a very accessible fit for all body types”.
The Lola Mom Jeans especially suit anyone as they’re an “easy to wear, comfortable jean, that can be styled up or styled down, even with the option to size up for a more relaxed fit jean”, Emilie says.
“Lola Mom accentuates your curves and makes you feel confident and comfortable,” she adds.
And there’s one particular stand out feature that make these jeans “super versatile”.
“One thing that is unique about Lola Mom is that the leg length is designed to sit on the ankle so you can dress them up with a pair of heels or boots, or styled more casually with a sneaker or sandal,” Emilie says.
I knew then and there I had to get my hands on a pair of these jeans to see if they were as flattering and comfortable as reviews claimed. I also enlisted the help of two other members of the news.com.au checkout team, all trialling different sizes and washes, to help you decide if the Neuw Lola Mom Jeans are for you.

As a millennial, the news that skinny jeans were out was hard to take. And I’m not going to lie, the transition was … challenging to say the least. I bought a number of straight and wide legged jeans – some of which were immediately returned – and some of which surprised me but I can’t deny I still sometimes long for a slim fit jean. If you are in the same boat, then you’re in luck because I’m here to confirm, the Neuw Lola Mom Jean is the perfect middle ground between skinny and straight.
I got the size 12 in the Fazed colourway (a lovely vintage blue that simply goes with everything) and I could not love them more. They fit true to size, and importantly for jeans, fit well on the waist and bum area. The legs taper to the ankle, giving you that nice silhouette while not being skin-tight. I’m 169cm and the jeans fall above my ankle.
As for the denim, it’s thick and sturdy with a little stretch to it so it won’t take long wearing in, which is a big win in my books. They feel well made and I can tell the jeans will keep their shape and last for a long time.
The super high rise waist is flattering and while on the whole the jeans are comfy, I am one of those people who do find a super high waist uncomfortable after sitting for long periods of times. I’d recommend sizing up if you prefer that looser fit around your waist.
But all in all, these jeans are comfortable while still flattering, hugging you in all the right places. You’ll feel confident and comfortable wearing them, which for jeans is the holy grail I’m always searching for.

I’ve been wearing ‘mum jeans’ for years now so the concept of a slimmer fit piqued my interest. I’ve also always loved the brand Neuw so I had high expectations – and these Lola jeans did not disappoint.
The fabric is thick and strong which really helps to cinch the waist in and keep the original shape of the jeans with each wear. (I find cheaper jeans lose their shape around the mid section very quickly.)
I chose the colour Zero Jemima as I’m a sucker for a neutral denim – they’re versatile, timeless and the perfect addition to any capsule wardrobe.
The beauty of slim fit jeans is that you can dress them up or down. I’ve styled mine with a looser fitting top to add balance to the outfit and a pair of sandals for the workplace. To take this out from day to night I’d just swap out the sandals for some cute heels or mules and voila – you have a great date night fit.
As if I wasn’t already convinced that these jeans were pretty close to perfect, my older (much more fashion forward) sister spotted them in my room and immediately asked to try them on. She loved them so much that she jumped online and bought a pair for herself in the same colour.

TLDR: These jeans have potentially changed my tight arse ways and jean-buying anxiety. I love the high waist and slightly stiff denim that holds you in, in all the right places. No notes.
Can buying a pair of jeans be a healing experience? It’s the question literally no-one is asking but also yes, yes it can be.
These jeans are the answer. They give cool girl, flattering, sleek, acceptable for work and night out wear vibes.
Shopping for jeans has always been anxiety inducing for me. Blame it on the lack of standardised sizing for women or the body image issues ingrained during my upbringing in the 90s/00s. And now, post-baby, I found myself with a completely new body and no jeans to fit it – until now.
My typical issue with jeans is that they tend to loosen up after a few hours of wear, emphasising my “mum tum.” But the high waist and minimal stretch of these jeans means they didn’t lose shape easily and held me in, in all the right places.
As someone with ample hips, mom jeans usually translate to excessively baggy, clown-like legs – but this slim fit is *chef’s kiss*.
I’ll admit, I am usually a tight arse when it comes to buying clothes so I gave the $180 price tag a double take but now I get all that “jeans are an investment piece” talk. I know they’ll last, keep their shape and more importantly, I won’t get bored of them.
I have no notes. They fit great – even the length is ideal – they’re great quality, they’ll go with anything and I just love the little belt loop ring detail, too.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHY ARE MOM STYLE JEANS SO POPULAR?
According to Nicole Adolphe, Head of Style at THE ICONIC, the enduring popularity of mom jeans is because “they are very flattering due to the high waist and being more tapered towards the ankle which creates an elongated silhouette.”
While Nicole notes some cuts of jeans can be harder to wear depending on your height or body shape, she says “mom jeans suit everybody’s shape and height as they look just as good rolled up with a heel as they do cropped”.
“The shape is also so versatile. For example, a mom jean can elevate a casual workwear look with a shirt or blazer or a cute top for a night out but looks just as good with a T-shirt and sneakers,” she says.
“They are also super easy to style shoes with as the cropped length works well with either a heel, boot or sneaker.”
WILL THE NEUW MOM LOLA JEANS STAY IN STYLE?
It’s a resounding “yes”.
“I think women have embraced this cut and it will be here to stay!” says Nicole.
“New trends come in and out and while there’s no doubt the wide leg and straight leg jeans are having a moment this season, when it comes to what people feel comfortable in, I think the mom jean is a wardrobe staple that everybody loves.”
TOP TIPS TO STYLE THE NEUW LOLA MOM JEANS:
Depending on the look you’re after, here are Nicole’s tip to styling the Neuw Lola Mom Jeans:
- Classic: White or black tee with any coloured blazer and a pointy toe pump. Add a belt to elevate the look.
- Casual: Oversize tee or boyfriend shirt tucked in at the front, left out at the back, and worn with a sneaker.
- Dressy: Bodysuit or top worn with a heel or ankle boot.
- Trending: Oversize sleeveless linen waistcoat in white, black or neutral colour worn with a sneaker or loafers.
