Once upon a time, the idea of wearing faux leather anything would have been considered a fashion no-no.
This is despite the fact leather pants are prohibitively expensive for most mere mortals and their thick material isn’t exactly suited to an Australian climate.
But fast forward to today and faux leather pants are popping up left, right and centre, quickly becoming a must-have staple that won’t break the bank.
The style once considered cheap is now seriously on trend with plenty of high-quality options, both in Australia and beyond.
“With new technology we have seen a huge shift in the quality of faux leather. I’m amazed by the quality of some of the faux leather we are seeing,” fashion stylist Donny Galella told news.com.au.
Celebrities also love them, with Nadia Bartel and Khloe Kardashian both spotted wearing faux leather pants on numerous occasions.
Khloe even includes them in her Good American clothing line, which is available to shop via THE ICONIC.
Donny said the rise in faux leather fashion options was down to a combination of more sustainably mindful shoppers and improvements in materials used.
“Up until recently, pretty much all vegan leather was made of plastic-based materials,” he explained.
“But over the past few years, fabric innovators have discovered many ways to make vegan leather out of everything from pineapples to cactus leaves.”
WHAT CAN I WEAR FAUX LEATHER PANTS WITH?
“Black leather pants can be styled like jeans, they can be paired with everything from shirts, jumpers, knits, blazer, coats and so much more,” Donny said.
“My main tip is avoid leather pants that are too shiny, go for a more matte black. Make sure they fit perfectly around your bum and down your legs.”

ARE FAUX LEATHER PANTS IN STYLE FOR 2022?
Leather pants have played a huge role in fashion history for decades. They first gained traction in the 1950s by the ‘Greasers’ as the ultimate symbol of adolescent rebellion before becoming the iconic fashion item for rock n’ roll and punk royalty in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Over the years, countless A-list celebrities like Iggy Pop, Sarah Michelle Gellar (hello, Buffy’s red pants) and Kate Moss have rocked leather pants for a variety of occasions, both formal and casual.
Fast forward to 2022 and they’re still as relevant as ever, proving leather pants – whether genuine or faux – will forever be a timeless piece of clothing. Nowadays, more fashion brands are experimenting outside of the traditional black skinny leg cut, playing with straight and wide-leg styles in a myriad of colours. Plus, if you’re on TikTok, you’ll know leather pants are a huge fashion trend, which says a lot.
“This season the skinny leather still remains popular. But as pant styles become more relaxed we are seeing more relaxed style pants too,” Donny said.
SHOULD I BUY FAUX LEATHER PANTS?
Faux leather pants are a great budget-friendly option compared to genuine leather pants. There are two key factors to consider when purchasing the perfect faux leather pants for you.
Fit: Just like jeans, leather pants now come in a myriad of shapes like bootcut, skinny and wide leg. There are also low, mid and high rise options so there really is a cut to accommodate every type of body shape.
Colour: Black is a great shade to opt for when it comes to leather pants as it will go with almost everything and add a touch of elegance or edge to your wardrobe. However, there are now plenty of other colour options available that are just as gorgeous. Neutral tones are incredibly popular for a more muted, everyday look, while patterns and bright colours like reds and blues are perfect for a night out where you really want to steal the show.
HOW DO YOU WASH FAUX LEATHER PANTS?
In good news, most faux leather is made from plastic or vinyl that can easily be cleaned with some mild soap and water. This means you’ll most likely be able to hand wash the garment at home, even if it’s lined. Before you begin washing your faux leather pants, take time to read the care instructions inside as some garments may call for dry cleaning while others may recommend spot-cleaning only. If you’re unsure, seek advice from a dry cleaner.
