The Australian actress beat Emma Thompson to take out the award for best actress in a motion picture drama.
The award increases the Australian actress's chances of winning an Oscar for her role as a New York socialite who has fallen on hard times.
The hard-hitting drama 12 Years a Slave won the Golden Globe for best picture, drama while
American Hustle took out the award for best musical or comedy.
Leonardo DiCaprio won the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical for The Wolf of Wall Street.
The actor beat out fellow nominees Christian Bale, Bruce Dern, Oscar Isaac and Joaquin Phoenix for the award.
Matthew McConaughey won best actor in a drama for his searing portryal of an AIDs victim in Dallas Buyers Club.
Other winners included Michael Douglas (Behind the Candelabra) and Amy Adams (American Hustle).
