BMC champion Cadel Evans produced a sensational climb up Corkscrew to claim stage three of the Tour Down Under and the Ochre jersey.

Showing all the qualities he used to claim the Tour de France, Evans blew the field apart on the 2.5km climb and held his nerve on the wild downhill finish to take the stage by 14 seconds.

Evans went into the 145km stage from Norwood to Campbelltown 13 seconds behind leader Simon Gerrans but now has a handy lead in the Tour after grabbing a 10-second bonus for the win.

"In this sport when you have an opportunity you have got to run with it," Evans said. "We are here for the general classication - the team has been training well and it is a solid group.

"The general classification is what we are all about."

Evans leads the tour by 11 seconds from Gerrans, who finished fifth into Campbelltown.
