Richard Buttrose wins cut in cocaine sentence

THE nephew of media identity Ita Buttrose has won a three-year reduction in his minimum jail term for supplying cocaine.

THE nephew of media identity Ita Buttrose has won a three-year reduction in his minimum jail term for supplying cocaine.

In March last year, Richard Buttrose, then 36, was jailed for a non-parole period of 12-and-a-half years, meaning he would become eligible for release on parole in August 2021.

But the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal today reduced his sentences, which resulted in his earliest parole release date now being August 2018.

Buttrose, of Paddington, pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying cocaine to an undercover police officer and another relating to the discovery of two bricks of the drug weighing almost six kilograms.

He was caught with $10 million worth of the drug at his Darling Point unit in 2009.

Police also discovered $1.3 million in cash.

A psychologist gave evidence at his sentencing hearing, saying Buttrose told him he was known as "the man" and his cocaine dealing led to his acceptance in the "wider echelons" of eastern Sydney society.
