NRLW: Inspirational Trent Robinson speech has Sydney Roosters primed to defy the odds

Trent Robinson has won three premierships, so the club’s NRLW side were all ears when ‘Robbo’ spoke to the squad prior to the grand final.

An inspirational Trent Robinson speech has the Sydney Roosters NRLW side primed to defy the odds and beat back-to-back premiers Brisbane for the first time in Sunday’s grand final.

Roosters coach Jamie Feeney revealed how Robinson’s wise words about making the most of the big moment had motivated his girls ahead of their clash against the formidable Broncos.

The three-time premiership-winning NRL mentor spoke to the women’s squad from outside the bubble, with the players hanging on every word.

“Robbo was standing behind the fence and all the girls were sitting on the grass like it was a teacher with his school kids,” Feeney said.

“But he was great, and I could see how appreciative the girls were that he took the time out to speak to them.

“Robbo told the girls not to let the game go past them without really getting involved because the grand final can go so quickly.

“That is especially the case in the NRLW given we have 20 less minutes. Robbo wants the girls to soak it all in, but when they are out on the field, he said they need to do their jobs and don’t have any regrets when the game is finished.

“He also spoke about how proud he is of the girls and how they turn up for each other.

“In the last couple of years that application for each other wasn’t there, but Robbo can see how they all now work hard for each other at training and on the field.”

It comes as the Roosters laugh off Brisbane’s bold attempt to claim underdog status for Sunday’s decider.

Broncos captain and star halfback Ali Brigginshaw shocked everyone when she declared her champion side weren’t the favourites despite their dominant record over the Roosters, including a 24-16-win last weekend.

“The Roosters have got better each week and I truly believe they are the in-form side,” Brigginshaw said.

Feeney’s face lit up with laughter when Brigginshaw attempted to dodge favouritism for the grand final.

“It’s interesting with Ali telling us that we are the form team when we got beaten,” he said.

“But it is what it is, and we are just preparing ourselves. I don’t think many of us read what is in the papers or read too much into it.

“We are just preparing to hopefully get our first win over the Broncos. They are a great footy side, and we are going to have to be at our very best to try and make history and beat them for the first time in three years.

“That said, 12 out of the squad’s 27 players have played in the last three years and lost to the Broncos, but it is a new year.

“We haven’t really spoken about having not beaten Brisbane, but all these girls know it.”

Brisbane are also desperate to win to lift the club’s spirits after the men’s side claimed the franchise’s first wooden spoon.

Brigginshaw revealed former Broncos back-rower Sam Thaiday spoke to the playing group during the week.

“Sam gave us some inspiring words and he made it clear that we are starting the Broncos off for 2021,” she said.

“The club didn’t have a great year with the men, but we are trying to bring some positivity to the club.”
