Famed British TV adventurer Bear Grylls to tackle Australia's far north

BEAR Grylls will try to survive in the treacherous Torres Strait off Australia's north coast.

FAMED British adventurer Bear Grylls will be swimming through crocodile-infested waters and stranding himself on a remote island as he tries to survive in the Torres Strait off Australia's north coast.

The Cairns Postsaid today the television star is filming an episode of his Man vs Wild series on Murray Island, the most eastern of the Torres Strait islands in the stretch of water between Australia and New Guinea.

The volcanic island, which has a population of about 450 people, is covered in dense tropical vegetation.

The episode, to be broadcast on Australian channel SBS, will be one of two filmed in Australia.

The second episode will be filmed at a yet-to-be-disclosed location.

State Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said having Bear Grylls filming an episode of his popular show in the Torres Strait was a major coup for Queensland.

Edward Grylls, who is nicknamed Bear, is a 35-year-old adventurer, writer and television presenter who hosts a series called Born Survivor: Bear Grylls for the British Channel 4 which is broadcast as Man vs Wild in Australia, Canada and the U.S. and as Ultimate Survival on the Discovery Channel in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
