What it actually takes to do sight-saving surgery

We’ve all seen the ads saying someone’s sight can be saved for as little as $33, but how does it actually work? We went behind the scenes at CBM to experience the pure joy of restoring vision.

Joanna, who is from the Philippines, is a bright student who taught herself English from a dictionary and dreams of becoming a businessperson. But when she was 13, she developed cataracts.

Say hello to Joanna

She had come top of her class in grade six, but she lost her vision overnight. When the local high school found out she was blind, they turned her away. It was heartbreaking; her dreams were out of reach.

One day she lost her sight

Thankfully, she was able to access free sight-saving surgery through CBM, in which her cataracts were removed. She was able to see again! It meant she could return to school… and help her mum set up a shop.

$33 made all the difference

About 94 million people around the world suffer from preventable forms of blindness such as cataracts. This creates a cycle of inequality, isolation, and exclusion, that leads to extreme forms of poverty.

Breaking the cycle of poverty

CBM supports eye health programs in more than 25 countries, working with local medical professionals and partner organisations in some of the world’s poorest regions to help them access the care they need.

Supporting grass-roots eye care

There’s nothing like the joy of restoring sight. This Miracles Day is on Thursday 18 August. Just $33 will provide sight-saving surgery to someone living in poverty. Can you give the miracle of sight?
