THE REALITY OF TRAVELLING TO BALI NOW

STORY: Kirrily Schwarz

It’s a privilege to visit Bali right now. After such a long time, with so many smiling faces waiting on the other end, it’s more than just a trip. It feels like coming home.

The steps to getting there are now relatively simple; the catch is that there are lots of them. Here's what to expect.

Check-in queues for the leg from Melbourne to Denpasar can be long as passengers scramble with paperwork. Lapsed PCR results will also hold things up.

Departing from Australia

On our trip, several travellers had to dash to the airport histopath for a new test prior to boarding.

Others forgot to download Indonesia’s Peduli Lindungi app and complete the mandated electronic Health Alert Card forms.

It was a similar story on arrival in Bali. The Government rolled out an impressive welcome for the first Australian arrivals, but things stalled in the arrivals hall.

Arriving in Indonesia

First, travellers must wait as officials check accommodation bookings and eHACs (electronic Health Alert Card).

Then travellers enter a new queue to pay for on-arrival PCR tests, and wait in line as more officials check information, including pre-departure PCR tests and vaccine certificates.

The next stop is PCR testing, then the visa desk, then the desk where passports are stamped. The wait between each is long.

It’s hard to imagine how the system would stand up to multiple arrivals, but at the very least, you should expect to spend about two and a half hours being processed.

Yes. Even more so for the refreshing air conditioning, cool cocktails, and crisp king-sized beds at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, where we stay for three nights while awaiting the results of our post-arrival PCR tests.

Is it worth it?

Vaccinated travellers simply need a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure and an Australia Digital Passenger Declaration form.
