Libs brought down by female teal tsunami

TEAL SHOCKWAVE

A "Teal wave" of professional women, backed by millionaire businessman Simon Holmes à Court’s Climate 200 fund, have swept into parliament on a climate action and integrity platform, wiping out blue-blood Liberal seats.

Former foreign minister Julie Bishop said the dramatic results were a "powerful message" from women to the Coalition that their interests were not being represented.

So who are the female independents who delivered a harsh lesson to outgoing Prime Minister Scott Morrison? These are the teal crossbenchers you need to know...

Dr Monique Ryan

Labelled “the giant killer" of this election, Monique Ryan looks set to beat Treasurer Josh Frydenberg in Kooyong, making him the highest profile victim of the night.

Widely seen as a leadership contender, his looming loss now leaves outgoing Defence Minister Peter Dutton as the favourite to take over from Scott Morrison.

Zoe Daniel

After a bitter campaign that included human excrement being smeared on a sign, Zoe Daniel, a former ABC journalist, has ousted Liberal Tim Wilson in Goldstein.

Allegra Spender

Businesswoman Allegra Spender, daughter of former Liberal MP John Spender and fashion designer Carla Zampatti, has taken inner-Sydney seat Wentworth from Dave Sharma.

Sophie Scamps

Former athlete and GP Sophie Scamps has knocked out Liberal MP Jason Falinski in Mackellar, a seat held by the party since 1977.

Kylea Tink

A businesswoman and former CEO of Camp Quality and the McGrath Foundation, Kylea Tink has taken North Sydney from moderate Trent Zimmerman.

Kate Chaney

Kate Chaney has claimed the WA seat Curtin, once held by Julie Bishop, unseating MP Celia Hammond after a single term.

Former Australian Democrats leader Natasha Stott Despoja said the rise of independent, professional women was a “brutal and appropriate wake-up call’’ to the Coalition.

Natasha Stott Despoja

The collapse in the women’s vote for the Coalition is incredibly significant... What a time to be an independent or minor-party candidate.
