When Aussie TV reboots go wrong

Words: Jamie Duncan Producer: Andrew Piva

It’s hard to bottle lightning twice in TV land. While some shows can find a new audience with a fresh take, others completely tank.

Here are some shows that should have stayed off the air.

Hosted by Daryl Somers, Hey Hey was a staple of Saturday TV in Australia for 15 years before it was axed in 1999 due to rising costs and falling ratings.

Hey Hey It's Saturday

Two reunion specials stirred enough interest for Nine to revive Hey Hey in 2010, but things didn’t go to plan.

Viewer interest in the revived show was subdued, plus a blackface racism furore over a Red Faces sketch saw Hey Hey quickly axed again.

Comedy show Kingswood Country was a big hit for Seven during its initial 89-episode run from 1980 to 1984.

Bullpitt!

Aussies took the bigoted, Holden-loving window putty factory worker Ted Bullpitt to their hearts as he whined through life.

Fifteen years of social change didn’t do the formula of politically incorrect humour any favours when Bullpitt! arrived on Seven in 1997.

The revamped offering quickly tanked in the ratings and was pulled off the air by the network after only 17 episodes.

The talent show hosted by Johnny Young and featuring a regular cast of fresh-faced singers was a huge hit on Channel 10 from 1971 to 1988

Young Talent Time

With music talent shows popular again, Young helped revive the program for Ten in 2012 with host Rob Mills and Tina Arena as as a judge.

But the ratings were dreadful. The revamped offering only lasted 15 episodes before it was pulled off air.

The ABC struck gold with SeaChange, starring Sigrid Thornton as a city lawyer-turned-magistrate who arrived in Pearl Bay after a divorce.

With a stellar cast that also featured David Wenham and William McInnes, the ABC made 39 much-loved episodes from 1998 to 2000.

In 2019 the show was rebooted by Channel Nine. Some of the original cast returned, but it couldn’t recapture the magic. It was axed after eight episodes.
