Inside the brazen cemetery hit on former bikie

TRUE CRIME

The dark underbelly of Melbourne’s bikie gang rivalries has again been exposed with the cold-blooded execution attempt of former Mongol Sam Abdulrahim at a funeral.

This is how the audacious hit went down and what the consequences could be.

The firing line

Abdulrahim had been the target of multiple shooting attempts since his release from prison in 2017, but he may have figured he was safe while driving in a funeral procession.

The 32-year-old had just paid respects to his departed cousin Naz and was leaving Fawkner cemetery in his $300,000 Mercedes when the attack took place.

In a Mazda SUV a few cars behind, balaclava-clad men pulled out of the line of vehicles and drove alongside Abdulrahim, before firing at least four shots at him.

The two gunmen then fled, only to crash into a fire hydrant. They then committed a terrifying carjacking of a mother and her son at a nearby Ampol service station to finish their escape.

Despite having at least three bullets in his chest, Abuldrahim drove himself past the crash scene, weaving in and out of traffic, before making it to the Fawkner police station where he received help.

Ignored warnings

The underworld and the police knew Abdulrahim had an “active contract” on his head as part of the reprisals currently playing out in Melbourne and Sydney.

Abdulrahim was warned by police that people were after him, but as one well-placed source told the Herald Sun, “he didn’t care”.

On May 28 armed police attended Abdulrahim's cruiserweight fight against Victor Organov at the Timber Yard in Port Melbourne after hearing there would be an attempt on his life.

The police presence appeared to buy some time for Abdulrahim, who won his bout against Organov, but his enemies were content to wait for another opportunity.

Motives for murder

One group to be scrutinised is Abdulrahim’s old gang, Mongols MC. Tensions remain high after he and his great mates Toby Mitchell and Mark Balsillie were booted from the club earlier this year.

There have also been clashes with members of the Comanchero MC. Abdulrahim was recently assaulted by gang members at Docklands and again while out with his girlfriend at the movies.

Also likely to be scrutinised are Middle Eastern organised crime figures. Among those Abdulrahim has had conflicts with previously are kickboxer Omar Bchinnati and the now-deceased Nabil Maghnie.

Sending a message

Abdulrahim has started his long road to recovery following at least two life-saving surgeries at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Only a day after the attack, Abdulrahim taunted his shooters from his hospital bed, posting a photo on social media of himself flipping his middle finger with the caption:

Allah is bigger than all these flops, they’ll get there (sic) day.
